The Minoan palace is the main site of interest at Knossos, an important city in antiquity, which was inhabited continuously from the Neolithic period until the 5th c. AD. The palace was built on the Kephala hill and had easy access to the sea and the Cretan interior. According to tradition, it was the seat of the wise king Minos. The Palace of Knossos is connected with thrilling legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth, with the Minotaur, and the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. Feel the spirit of the Minotaur – the half man, the half bull – which was said to be locked up within the heart of the palace. Explore the never-ending maze of rooms where ancient frescoes capture every facet of life, reflecting the presence of civilization since 1900 B.C. Walking through the multicolored rooms and workshops of the east wing, one can understand why the palace of Knossos was associated with the mythological labyrinth. During this tour you will be taken back 4000 years to the time of the oldest civilisation in Europe. SOCIAL PROGRAMME 08 May 2010 Boutari Winery The Fantaxometoho Estate, on Crete, lies just outside the village of Skalani, on the road towards the village of Myrtia, birthplace of the famous Greek writer Kazantzakis. It is situated within the Arhanes vine-growing region, a district producing “Appellation d’origine de Qualite Superieure” wines. Extending over the northern slopes of a low hill, rising from 170 to 215 metres above sea level, the vineyard is protected from the warm southern winds from the Libyan Sea and benefits from the cooling effect of the meltemia, the yearly winds blowing from the north. Crete Winery, more specifically offers to visitors: ► A guided tour of the production facilities ► A tour of the underground wine cellars ► An introduction to the art of wine-tasting ► A multi-media show of the history of winemaking in Naoussa ► The opportunity to enjoy wines in combination with local, traditional dishes ► The opportunity to purchase current and older vintages of Boutari wines as well as wines of limited production ► The opportunity to purchase wine related books and accessories ► A Reception room for 150 people ► The opportunity to combine the visit to the winery with trips to famous nearby archaeological sites. SOCIAL PROGRAMME 08 May 2010 Historical Museum of Heraklion Historical Museum of Heraklion, facing the sea, is dedicated to bringing 2,000 years of history to life. The museum was founded in 1952 in a handsome turn of the 20th Century townhouse. It houses important examples of early Christian artifacts, stonework and decorative objects of Roman, Arab, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish origin. There is a panoramic wooden model of mediaeval Heraklion, or Candia as it was called by the Venetians (after its Arabic name El Khandak) in one room, beautifully detailed, with push-button spotlights picking out the locations of many important sites of worship, defense and government. Some of these buildings are still standing.
