QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT
“QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT” Drawdown analysis Methodology proposal of the Consortium Aim: To explain the specific methodology of the quantitative impact assessment; focus on groundwater water bodies. Terms and Definitions QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT 1. TERMS It is considered as an impact if it is the result of a pressure on the groundwater body status according to the quality criteria established in the Water Framework. Quantitative impact are the ones that can affect the quantitative status of GWB. Its mean decreasing in groundwater level, reducing groundwater flows or levels supporting GW dependent terrestrial ecosystems, reversing flow directions which results in significant intrusion of saline water (u others). Regardless of the particular process to be adopted, and as with the identification of significant pressures, the assessment requires a conceptual understanding of what causes impact. The impact is the monitored evidence (falling groundwater levels) of the influence of a quantitative pressure (abstractions) on the hydrological regime. The term impact can also be understood to relate to the ecological effects witch are consequence of changes to hydrological regime. So, the type of analysis will be dependent on what data are available. In this case, the methodology focuses on identifying variations in the flow direction or detect significant drawdowns. QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT 2. Source of information QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION ABOUT QUANTITATIVE IMPACTS MASTER PLAN REPORTS: It’s the most important source of information used for analyze quantitative impacts in each GWB. Master Plan reports have not the same format in each basin. The methodology to calculate the GW Balance could be change depending of available data. Piezometric maps and some evolution graphs are shown in these Master Plan Reports. GIS MAPS: Groundwater level maps. (campaings with point data of water level, countour line shape files, etc.) HISTORICAL GROUNDWATER LEVEL DATA: To a greater or lesser extent, there are historical data of GW levels in each river basin, and sometimes dating from the 60s to the present (word and excel documents). SPRING : Shape files with location of springs, and yield data in Master Plan reports. GW MONITORING: The Consortium has received the location and main characteristics of the piezometers of each sub-basin. (shape files, or excel documents) WORKSHOP (IDEA-SHARING Sep-Oct 2015). The Turkish basin experts provide information to the consortium about several areas and sub-basins with over-abstraction difficulties. QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT 3. Methodology QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT To establish the quantitative impact for each GWB it has been carried out: 1.- Analysis of available information – Gathering and organization of raw data 2.- Morphology of contour lines and flow directions – Identification of recharge and discharge areas – Location of springs – Zones with flow reversals and pumping cones have been identified. 3.- Consideration of historic data on groundwater level and actual monitoring – Location of monitoring piezometer with available data in the GWB – Performing trends and evolution of water level 4.- Expert’s judgment (from idea-sharing seasons carried out during the months of September and October of 2015) is relevant to verify the available data as well as in situations on which there is a lack of information or uncertainty. QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT 4. Categories of quantitative impact QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT As a result of this analysis, GWB are classified into four different groups depending of its impact: GWB with verified impact: those not complying with the existing national water quality standards and most likely will fail to meet the Directive’s environmental objectives GWB with likely impact: those likely not complying with the existing European water quality standards GWB with no apparent impact: those not reflecting significant deterioration and for which environmental objectives are expected to be met GWB with no data on their status Type of Impact Criteria/threshold Verified Impact Sharp decreasing in piezometric levels over time. Expert criteria Likely Impact Expert criteria Some indications impact (piezometric) without enough data to check them No Apparent Impact No variation or increasing in piezometric over time. Expert criteria No Data No information on qualitative/quantitative indicators. QUANTITATIVE IMPACT ASSESSMENT 5.
