Today, in an environment where densely populated surface mount technology has become commonplace, and where ISO 9000 verifications are required, the need for ionic testing is essential. Aqueous Technologies’ Zero Ion ionic contamination tester is equipped with the following features and benefits Process Control The built-in computer automatically calculates NaCl/square equivalence (per mil spec), operates in an automatic or manual mode, and is equipped with a built-in memory containing up to 50 test parameters. Built-In Data Logging Printer The Zero Ion tester is equipped with a built-in data-logging printer that automatically records test date, lot/batch number, and test results. Submerged Sprays The submerged sprays provide excellent agitation of the test solution while eliminating test inaccuracies caused by carbon dioxide adsorption associated with other open-air spray systems. The combination of submersion and spraying creates three different fluid flow angles across the board surface. It is this random angle flow of fluid that gives the Zero Ion system its superiority in ionic contamination detection. Meets Cleanliness Specifications The Zero-Ion Ionic Contamination Tester meets industrial cleanliness specifications including MIL-STD-2000A, MIL-P28809, IPC-TM-650, and ANSI/J-STD-001B. 10 A q u e o u s Te c h n o l o g i e s Unique Dual-Loop Flow System The Zero Ion tester utilizes a dynamic measurement method, the method of choice for detecting (weak) ion activators commonly found in no-clean fluxes. With dynamic measurement technology, the contamination test solution is monitored and then filtered to supply de-ionized test solution back to the test chamber, resulting in greater solubility. The increased solubility eliminates the “saturation limit effect”, associated with other static measurement methods. Cost Effective The Zero Ion tester is extremely cost effective. Its price is among the lowest in the industry, yet its performance is second to none. Compact Design The Zero Ion tester is extremely compact, requiring just over a 2’ square footprint, with test cells available for board sizes up to 24” x 24” (61cm x 61cm). Ambient Testing Unlike other systems, which require heated test solution, the Zero-Ion performs all tests without the need for heat. Eliminating heat increases equipment safety (test solution is flammable), reduces power costs, eliminates wash-solution heat-up time, and reduces test solution evaporation. CLEANLINESS TESTING SYSTEMS ( L o c a l i z e d Te s t i n g ) The Industry’s Only Cleanliness Testing System Capable of Determining: Volume of Contamination Location of Contamination Identification of Contamination (with optional IC Test) F oresite developed the C3 Localized Cleanliness Tester out of an industry need to evaluate specific areas of circuitry or sensitive components that could hold concentrated pockets of contamination. These areas are overlooked by standard industry tools and testing methods that examine the total board. Methods such as ROSE testing and ion chromatography with standard total board extraction take a measurement of the average cleanliness of the board, thus overlooking pockets of contamination that can potentially cause quality concerns and field failures. The C3 serves two main purposes: • To perform as a production-floor cleanliness monitoring tool that provides an immediate ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’ test reading for the 0.1 in2 area where the extraction is taken. • To serve as an extraction tool for use in ion chromatography testing which will determine the exact type and quantity of ionic species present on a board or component area. Operation Principles The C3 uses a deionized steam extraction system to collect a 2.2 ml sample from a 0.1 in2 area of circuitry. The system produces a microburst of steam that is allowed to soak for 20 seconds and is then aspirated into a collection cell. This steam is applied 8 times to achieve effective residue removal from the area of analysis. After 9 collection cycles, an electrical test is performed across a sacrificial y-pattern electrode to check for electrical leakage. 10v of electricity is applied, and the C3 makes a determination after 60 seconds as to whether or not the sample is ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’. The current threshold for considering a sample clean is 500 μA, and is based on 13 years of ionic analyses performed by Foresite. The extracted sample can then be used for ion chromatography analysis to determine the type and quantity of the localized contamination. C3 was developed by Foresite and is sold worldwide exclusively by Aqueous Technologies Corporation.
