Her eserle müzelerimiz zenginleşti. Başaran Ulusoy Turkey left behind the year 2012 with a reasonable decline in the field of tourism as it had been predicted. Istanbul, however, raised the bar contrary to the conditions prevailing across the country. Did our museums have a share in this successful situation? If so, to which extent did they influence the figures? This question is hard to answer, at least at this stage. However, there is something we are certain about: museums in Turkey have experienced in 2012 one of their most auspicious years. They have been refurbished in terms of their physical conditions and recruited well-trained new personnel, reaching higher standards. Another significant event in 2012 was the return from abroad of various historical artefacts belonging to our cultural heritage. Each recovered item contributed to the wealth of our museums. This development attracted worldwide attention and was reported in the international media. This is the last issue of our Museums’ Journal for this year. We will continue in 2013 to share with our readers the marvels of the world of museums. I believe that we will witness next year also new initiatives and success stories concerning Turkey’s museums. 5 TOPKAPI SARAYI’NIN SAKLI İNCİSİ harem dairesi bir ‘eğitim merkezi’ idi. bir ‘hizmet mabedi’ idi. ama nihayetinde padişah’ın ‘evi’ idi... The hidden pearl of the Topkapı Palace THE HAREM It was an ‘education centre’ and a ‘service temple’. But in the end it was the residential quarters of the Sultan... Bu avlular ile ayrılan kapı girişleri sonrasında koğuş- 8 People are always interested in the unknown, curious about what is hidden. This is valid as much for things in our proximity, as for mysteries hidden in the depths of history. We always want to know more, to see what is behind closed doors. And, the more blurry the dusty pages of history are, the greater are the speculations about them. One of the best examples of this is the Topkapı Palace Harem, also known as Darüssaade. This place being the Sultan’s private space; it was not allowed to reveal what was happening inside. However, the more things were kept secret; all the more stories were invented about it. Hence, it became the subject on which the greatest variety of rumours was being produced, in the past as in the present. But now, let us set aside fantasies and look at the facts of the harem... The word harem is derived from the Arabic word “harim” meaning confidential. The Ottoman rulers lived with their families in the Topkapı Palace Harem, from the 16th century until the beginning of the 19th century. Since its structures reflect the various periods in terms of architectural styles, the complex gained great importance with regard to the history of Ottoman architecture. The Harem, standing out from this angle among its existing counterparts in other Islamic palaces, was built at the second courtyard and rear gardens of the Topkapı Palace and expanded over the centuries. It was carefully hidden and separated from the “selamlık” (the quarters reserved for men) and the administrative sections of the palace, through very high walls. The complex includes more than three hundred rooms, nine baths, two mosques, a hospital, dormitories, and laundry rooms. The overall structure of the present configuration, resulting from successive renovations and expansions carried out over a time lar, odalar, köşk ve hizmet binaları yer alır. Saray kadınlarının bulunduğu asıl Harem bölümünü, girişteki Harem Ağaları bölümünden ayıran kapıya Hümayun Kapısı; Cümle Kapısı ya da Saltanat Kapısı denir. Saltanat Kapısı, Harem’in üç ana bölümünün bağlandığı nöbet yerine açılır. This chamber, reflecting the golden age of the Ottoman art of decoration, belonged to Sultan Ahmed III. It is thought that, some of the pictures in this room, which is also called the ‘Fruit Room’ or the ‘Dining Room’, could have been made by Ahmed III, who himself was a good calligrapher (left). The buildings around the Courts of Queen Mother and Favorites, attract interest with their porched facades (right page). 9 Haremin başında kim vardı? Kızlar Ağası adı verilen hadım edilmiş bir erkek. Kızlar Ağası sadece padişahtan ve sadrazamdan emir alırdı. Genellikle Mısır’da yetiştirilmiş bir Arap olurdu. Harem’in iç bölümlerinden ise Haznedar Usta sorumluydu. Who was the head of the harem? A castrated male called the Master of Girls who was receiving his orders directly from the sultan and the grand vizier. It would often be an Arab person who grew up in Egypt. A female person called Mistress Treasurer was responsible for the internal discipline of the harem. How were the names of concubines given? The first thing to do when a concubine arrived at the palace was to give her a new name in harmony with her beauty, character or physical appearance. The name given, sometimes personally by the Sultan, was written on a piece of paper pinned on her garment’s chest in order to be seen and remembered by everybody. Persian names of a poetical nature with beautiful meanings were usually given; such as, Çeşm-i Ferâh, Hoşnevâ, Handerû, Ruhisâr, Neş’e-yâb and Nergiz-edâ. Which sultan abolished the harem and for which reason? Sultan Vahdettin decided to abolish the Harem deemed no longer compatible with the lifestyles of the modern epoch. He provided material support to those living at the harem at that time, to enable them to continue their lives outside. Imperial Hall (left), this vaulted passage paved with stones, the longest passage in the Harem, was also called the ‘Golden Road’ (below), one of the courtyards in the Harem (right) and the tile panel with cypress motifs decorating the walls (rightmost). span of several centuries, can be summarized as a succession of courtyards lined up one after another. Dormitories, rooms, villas and service buildings are situated behind the entrance doors placed around these courtyards. The gate separating the main part of the harem, i.e. the actual living quarters of women, from the section of eunuchs situated right at the entrance, is called the Imperial Gate, the Main Entrance or the Sultanate Door. The Imperial Gate opens up on the watch posts area binding the three main sections of the harem. The side walls of the guard station are covered with the famous cypress tile panels typical of the Topkapı Harem. It consists of a domed platform surrounded by an arcade, with on its left side, the door to the Concubines Hallway and Concubines and Kadı (Muslim judges) Masters Patio, on its middle, the door to the Sultan Mother Patio and, on its right side, the door leading to the Sultan’s Quarters through the Golden Path. The Patio of the Concubines and Matrons is the smallest courtyard of the Harem, built in the mid-16th century along with the courtyard of the eunuchs. The baths, the laundry fountain, laundry rooms, kitchen and service spaces used by concubines and the apartments of the matrons are located behind the rear porches. The sultan’s mother, wives, children, concubines and eunuchs lived in the harem. Inside, there was a quite animated way of life. Ladies from mainly Crimea, Russia and Circassia were brought here at young age, received a complete education at the palace and, after nine years of service, they were allowed to leave the harem with a certificate of freedom called “Itıkname” and a nice dowry. Education occupied a primary place at the Harem. Musically gifted ladies were taught to play Turkish music instruments. Some of them like for instance Leyla Saz and Dilhayat Kalfa became even well-known composers of Turkish music. Foreigners were not allowed in here. One exception was British envoy Thomas Daloom, the first and only foreign guest ever to enter the Topkapı Palace Harem. He came to deliver an organ which was a gift sent by Queen Elizabeth II to the Sultan during the reign of Beyazıd II. Daloom was allowed to enter the Harem in order to set up the organ there. There are nine big baths at the Harem, equipped with water supply and plumbing systems of great quality, calling for admiration even today. Besides, each room has hot and cold water taps. The Harem is equipped with a multitude of doors. Doors disguised as wardrobe doors often open up onto other rooms or courtyards. This can be regarded as a security-related architectural detail. On the wall facing the Masters Mosque, there were windows overlooking the prayer room so that women were able to perform the “namaz” (Moslem praying ritual) by following the imam during prayer hour from those windows. Another interesting detail concerning the Harem is the fact that it was a very quiet place notwithstanding the great number of people living in this big and bustling place. It was bad manners to raise the voice at the harem. Everything was done in a respectful and quiet manner. A silent form of communication through eyes’ contact and eye brow signs was common practice. Harem Dairesi neden kuruldu? Why was the Harem established? The first time such a large Harem was set up during the Ottoman period was at the Topkapı Palace. Security was the main reason for the establishment of the Harem by Fatih Sultan Mehmet (the Conqueror). Before Fatih Sultan Mehmet, women married to Ottoman sultans were not necessarily chosen among Muslim ladies. Non-Muslim spouses were converted to Islam following their marriage and learned about the Moslem traditions and customs after they began to live at the court. Fatih Sultan Mehmet thought that this was not a safe practice from the point of view of the State security and decided that women to be raised to the status of Sultans’ Wives should be selected among young ladies having received a lengthy and thorough education at the court. 11 Kapısında “Allah’ım bize de hayırlı kapılar aç” yazıyor Haremin hiç bilinmeyen yönlerinin gerçeğe uygun olarak anlatıldığı ‘Padişahın Evi: Topkapı Sarayı Harem-i Hümayunu Sergisi’, 13 Haziran’da Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Has Ahırlar Sergi Salonu’nda açıldı. 15 Ekim’e dek sürecek sergide 270 parça eser sergileniyor. 19’uncu yüzyıla ait ‘Sofra Örtüsü’, 18’inci yüzyılın sonu - 19’uncu yüzyılın başına ait ‘Altın Kahve Sitil Askısı’, 19’uncu yüzyıla ait ‘Kahve Sitil Örtüsü’, 19’uncu yüzyıla ait ‘Mineli Gümüş Kahve İbriği’, 19’uncu yüzyıla ait ‘Murassa Altın Fincan Zarfı’, 18’inci yüzyıla ait ‘Tombak Kapaklı Sahan’, 18’inci yüzyıl sonu - 19’uncu yüzyıl başına ait ‘Murassa Altın Sakızlık’, 19’uncu yüzyıla ait ‘Altın Şerbet Kupası’, 14’üncü yüzyıla ait ‘Seladon Tabak’, 16. yüzyılın sonuna ait ‘Mücevherli Kâse’ye kadar birçok eser sergide ziyaretçileri bekliyor. Views from the Bath of the Sultan. All the furnishings in the Harem were very valuable. Almost every item of art was a sophisticated product. For example, there is a poem in Persian on the back of a mirror from 1520, declaring that onlookers will become one with the mirror. Topkapı Palace Harem inspired many books and films. Against the backdrop of all the military and political struggles, we are interested in the most subtle aspects of life within human history. To acknowledge that the Sultan was ultimately a human being, we like to see the silverware he used, to walk on the marble stairs he climbed etc. Hence, the Harem will always continue to intrigue and radiate its charm. Pamukkale University professors, young archaeologists and workers are exchanging notes on the work achieved during the day, while sipping tea at the garden where the excavation team meets to rest. An expression of well-deserved pride and happiness appears on the faces of each one of them. And rightfully so! This team has been working for years to extract from under several meters of earth, one of the most glorious ancient cities established on Anatolian soil, digging up inch by inch, progressing millimeter by millimeter and bringing to the daylight huge columns, tombs, agoras, streets, etc. Subject matter is the ancient city of Laodicea situated near Pamukkale (Hierapolis) within the borders of the Denizli province. The excavations carried out since 2003 showed that this was one of the largest metropolitan cities of its time in Anatolia, thought to have been the greatest financial and commercial centre of Western Anatolia. Woven products made of the wool of a specific Laodicea grown raven coloured sheep type, occupied an important place in the textile manufacturing industry of their time. This traditional background is probably at the origin of Denizli’s growing into a major textile centre currently in modern Turkey. Textile products produced in Laodicea were taken to the port of Ephesus and shipped from there to Samos, Athens and even Italy. The best textile products of their time were woven in the region of the Lycos (Çürüksu) river valley where Laodicea is located and exported to the entire ancient world. Excavations in Laodicea were initiated in 1961-1963, by researchers from the University of Laval in Quebec Canada, resulting in the Tapınak A (sol sayfa), İsis Rahibesi heykeli (solda), I. su dağıtım terminaline ait su hattı (en üstte), nekropol alanından mezar örneği (ortada) ve Laodikeia Hac Kilisesi’ne ait vaftizhane (üstte). Temple A (left page), statue of a Priestess of Isis (left), water pipe belonging to the first water distribution terminal (uppermost), a grave from the necropolis (in the middle), baptistery belonging to the Laodicea Holy Cross Church (above). 19 LAODİKEİA notları • Laodikeia’da spora çok önem veriliyormuş. Notes on LAODICEA • In Laodicea, sports were important. A great variety of articles belonging to the athletes were found in excavations, such as training and cleaning supplies, makeup materials, jewellery and medals. günümüzde Pamukkale Üniversitesi’nin büyük bir titizlik ve hızla sürdürdüğü çalışmalarla devam ediyor. • Also the medical science was quite advanced in Laodicea. There was even a medical school. Evidence has been found that successful brain surgery was performed in the ancient city two thousand years ago, actually healing patients. • Laodicea population’s nutrition was consisting mainly of dry foods. This is to deduct from the teeth corrosion observed on a great number of the skeletons found in the excavations. • The North Theatre presents a significant detail: unlike in other theatres of the same period, there are steps; hence seats, which were permanently reserved for the members of the city’s leading families as well as for members of trade guilds and manufacturing associations. • A two-thousand-year old cockfighting relief was found on one of the buildings. This relief from the Roman period is the oldest cockfighting relief found to date. This shows that cockfighting is a tradition that goes way back in history and that cock fights were quite common during the Roman period. Syrian Street (above left), embossed frieze block (left), statue of Athena and on her breast the Head of Medusa relief (above), and terracotta plate with carved patterns (below). Buna hiç şüphe yok. discovery of an impressive fountain structure preserved in intact form. Pamukkale University continues today the excavation work with great diligence and care. Laodicea with its large and small theatres, its stadium, parliament building, agora, baths, basilica, its sewage systems, water distribution point, aqueducts, its monumental fountain and other structures is considered as one of the major residential areas of the Roman Period. Laodicea was founded by Antiochus II Theos, King of Syria, in 261-253 BC, in honour of his wife Queen Laodice. The settlement area of the ancient city was earlier the location of a village originally called Diospolis, “City of Zeus”, and afterwards Rhoas. The name ‘City of Zeus’ indicates the presence here of a very old and deep-seated holy place. In addition, the statue of a Priestess of Isis found in the ancient city is an indication of the presence of an Isis temple. Isis, a goddess of Egyptian origin, symbolizes the soil, the revival of nature, the seas and the undersoil. The likely presence of a temple of Isis in Laodicea can be explained with the Syrian origin of the founders of the ancient city. Laodicea is a city which was greatly damaged as a result of earthquakes and wars. For example, it was almost completely destroyed during the ‘King of Pontus Mithridates Wars in 88-85 BC. However, thanks to its rich resources and the diligence of its people, the city used to quickly succeed in recovery. It reached the highest level of prosperity in the Roman and early Christian and late Byzantine period. Meanwhile, due to the therapeutic properties of the thermal water stemming from Hierapolis in its close vicinity, Laodicea also gained importance as a treatment centre. Their legal system was also developed. At the beginning of 50 BC, the Governor of Cilicia, great Roman statesman Cicero worked here on the judiciary system for 10 weeks and provided for the preparation of the laws. The spread of Christianity was not spontaneous and easy in 21 Laodicea, because of the fact that the population of the city was wealthy and had a distant approach to religion. However Laodicea was an important place also for Christianity, one of the seven oldest churches in Anatolia, the ‘Goncalı’ Church being located here. Moreover, because St. Mary stayed here for a while to receive treatment on her way to Ephesus, the city became a holy place and pilgrimage centre for Christians. Now this city, including its two- big and smalltheatres, temples, assembly hall, stadium, gymnasium and its church, was uncovered. The columns surrounding the city centre were reraised. A ceiling was built from glass plates, 50 kg carry-resistant each, to allow the visitors to look down on Laodicea by walking on this glass ceiling and, to examine all this from a bird’s eye view. Laodicea is one of the most splendid cities established on Anatolian soil. According to Prof. Dr. Celal Şimşek, the ancient city will reach a visitors’ number of 2 million by the year 2015 and will eventually be bestowed onto the future as a world heritage site. No doubt about it. ART INSIDE-OUT The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of several Guggenheim Foundation museums which are located in various cities around the world. However, the Bilbao Guggenheim is the best -known among them, since the museum building itself, conceived by Canadian-American Architect Frank Gehry is an extraordinary work of art as valuable as the objects inside the museum. 24 İÇİ DE DIŞI DA SANAT! Guggenheim Bilbao 25 yle anıtlar / yapılar / binalar vardır ki, gidip görmesek bile mutlaka resmini görmüş, adını duymuşuzdur. Guggenheim Vakfı’nın Bilbao’daki müzesi buna ‘sıra dışı’ bir örnektir. Sıradışı, çünkü sanattan çok popüler ve “ilginç” olanla ilgilenen dünyamızda, öne çıkıp kendisini göstermeyi başarmıştır. Kimileri onu bir gemiye benzetir. Kimilerine göre ise bir balinayı hatırlatır. Hatta yaralı bir balinayı. Titanyumdan yapılma katman katman dış yüzeyi daha uzaktan heyecanlandırır insanı. Efsanelerdeki, masallardaki balinalar gibi içinde barındırdığı hazineleri görmeye davet eder. Eder ama, kimse o sanat eseri yapıya uzun uzadıya bakmadan içeri girmez. Giremez. 26 There are monuments, structures, buildings which are familiar to us even if we did not see them in nature. We have seen their photos so many times in books, magazines and films. Guggenheim Foundation’s Bilbao Museum is an outstanding example in this regard; exceptional because it succeeded in coming forward and being noticed in a world like ours which is showing more interest for what is popular rather than art. Some compare it to a ship, others to a whale, also an injured whale. Like the whale in holy books, it invites you to enter its inner side. But the building composed of several layers in titanium is so appealing that no one can go inside before spending ample time admiring the outside of the museum. The Bilbao Museum is actually not the first of the chain of Guggenheim museums. However, it is the most famous among them because of the unique building. It is an icon appealing not only to architects or the art scene, but also to ordinary people. Bearing the signature of the architect Frank Gehry, it is rather an extraordinary “sculpture” than an ordinary building. Bilbao is the Basque region’s most developed industrial city in northern Spain. Therefore, the city has many industrial structures termed aesthetically ugly, gray, bulky buildings. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was built in a place like that. Thanks to the architectural genius of Gethry, it was harmoniously integrated into the city’s skyline and brought a unique beauty to her. At the outset, Gethry thought of steel or aluminium as appropriate material for the building in order to blend into the city’s gray appearance. However, there were disadvantages of both. They did not reflect the sun properly and got tarnished. Besides, the city administration did not approve of their use. The solution came from titanium. Moreover, titanium quilting! The quilting feature gave the building the appearance of a “living organism”. As to the irregular structure of the entire building, it emphasizes the disorder of nature itself. Next door to Bilbao in Barcelona, Spain created a legend of architecture Guggenheim Bilbao Müzesi’nin dışı titanyum kaplı. Jeff Koons’un Puppy adlı eseri (sağda). The exterior of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is covered with titanium plates. ‘Puppy’ by Jeff Koons (right). Örneğin, Anselm Kiefer’in Work in Progress isimli 15 metre boyundaki devasa eseri müzede kendisine rahatlıkla yer in the person of Gaudi. Gaudi’s buildings reminiscent of sea shells and his structures where there is almost not a single straight line, created a complete revolution in architecture. And would the Guggenheim Museum cause such an effect? Or would the people of Bilbao be faced with something gnarled in the name of modern art? During the construction phase, the Bilbao inhabitants were quite worried. Some even collected signatures to advocate for the interruption of the construction. But once the construction was complete, everyone took a sigh of relief. Nowadays, the museum is a source of pride for all citizens of Bilbao. Now it’s time to enter into the museum, but only after having said a big hello to “Puppy”, the huge puppy dog figure situated in front of the building, which pop-art artist Jeff Koons made in 1992 originally for an exhibition in Germany. Later it was brought to Bilbao where it is standing guard in front of the museum and welcoming guests with its 70 thousand fresh flowers changing every season. Yes, it’s now time to visit the museum. However, we have to refer to the structure again before the works of art in the museum, because ceilings with different heights and interesting walls separating the exhibition halls inside lead towards new surprises. Gehry built a museum which responds to the needs of contemporary art. For instance, the 15 meters high installation by Anselm Kiefer called “Work in Progress” found a suitable space for itself in the museum. Due to the mobile structure of the 27 Müzelerin McDonalds’ı mı? Krens’in hayali, küresel bir müze zinciri oluşturmaktı. Önce New York’ta iki yeni merkez tasarladı. Birini açmayı başardı. Ardından Las Vegas’ın ünlü kumar ve konaklama kompleksinde iki müze açtı. Amerika’daki bu zincire, Venedik’teki Peggy Guggenheim, Bilbao ve Berlin Deutsche Bank merkezinde kurulan Deutsche Guggenheim müzelerini ekledi. Krens’in hedefi küresel bir müze işletme sistemi örgütleyerek, Guggenheim’i bunun markası yapmak. Onlar müzeleri ‘ulaşılır’ kıldıklarını düşünüp bundan gurur duyduklarını her fırsatta dile getiriyor. New York’taki Guggenheim Müzesi içi ve dışı. The interior and exterior of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Is it the McDonald of museums? The Guggenheim Museum in New York was opened in 1959 by the Guggenheim Foundation established in 1937 by Solomon R. Guggenheim, from the mining giant Guggenheim dynasty. The building housing Solomon Guggenheim’s private collection of modern art was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, who revolutionized traditional museum architecture, in the shape of a white concrete plain band soaring up towards the top in the form of a helical stretches. Through this Museum of Modern Art, Solomon Guggenheim pioneered American modernism, referred to as abstract expressionism or the New York School. In 1989, the museum embarked upon a series of major projects under the management of Thomas Krens whose dream was to create a global chain of museums. He first conceived two new headquarters in New York, of which he was able to establish one. He continued the series with two museums in Las Vegas, the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain and the Deutsche Guggenheim Museum at the Deutsche Bank Centre in Berlin. Krens’s objective to organize a global museum management system under the brand name of Guggenheim, similar to the international franchise system in the hotel or shopping centre business, is being mocked by art critics as the ‘McDonald’s of museums’. But neither Krens nor the Guggenheim Family are bothered with such critics. They seize every opportunity to voice their pride of having made art accessible to the broader public. 28 Guggenheim Bilbao’nun orta avlusu. ‘The Matter Of Time’ adlı enstalasyon, ona ait bir galeride yer alıyor. Guggenheim Bilbao için çağdaş sanatı temsil etmesi yetiyor. museum, you first view the lower part of the installation at the entrance floor and discover its upper parts as you climb progressively to the higher floors. Another example distinguishing the museum is Richard Serra’s installation “The Matter of Time” created exclusively for the Guggenheim Bilbao, which is in a special gallery reserved to it. Visitors of the gallery have to walk between the statues and even to browse through them. The installation which brings a whole new approach to the concept of time and space can still be viewed on a bird’s-eye view from the upper floor, thanks to the museum’s amazing ability. Last example: a 9-meter giant spider statue by French artist Louise Bourgeois, nicknamed “Spiderwoman”. She is the one who named the sculpture on display outside the museum building “Maman” i.e. Mom. The artist, who completed the statue at the age of 95, dedicated it to her mother who was a tailor and whose work she likened to the priceless weaving labour of a spider. Of course, all the works in the museum do not have to be dimensioned in accordance with the size of the building. But they have to represent contemporary art in order to be accepted into the premises of Guggenheim Bilbao. Facts and figures: • Guggenheim Bilbao was completed and opened to visitors in 1997 following a construction phase of four years. • The museum building is built on an area of 11 thousand square meters. • The exterior of the building is covered with 21,000 titanium pieces of different size and slope. • 1 million people visit the museum annually. About 60 percent of them, that is nearly 600 thousand people are coming from outside the country. • The population of the city of Bilbao which welcomes so many tourists each year is only 353-thousand according to the last census. Yani... Bir sonraki Guggenheim Müzesi İstanbul’da açılabilir. Neden olmasın! 30 Guggenheim Istanbul... Why not? Guggenheim Museums are at the service of art at six different points of the world: New York, Venice, Berlin, Bilbao, Abu Dhabi and, finally, with the last opened museum, in Helsinki. Each one of them contributes greatly to the character of the city where they are opened; revitalizing the city in terms of art, economy and tourism. For instance, Bilbao’s urban plan was entirely revised in view of the construction of the Guggenheim Museum, the industrial port was reorganized and the metro system was expanded. The Spanish city enjoyed the new economic, social and cultural dynamism brought as a consequence of these lengthy and costly projects. The Guggenheim Bilbao welcomed 1.35 million visitors the year it opened; its current contribution to the region’s economy is measured as an annual 230 million Euros. The number of international conferences held in the city has increased 10-fold after the establishment of the museum. Art circles conjecture already about next cities of the Guggenheim chain, among which the name of Istanbul is often mentioned. Istanbul, as one of the most important centres of civilization, culture and art, also managed to be referred to as one of the world’s modern art headquarters. That is to say that the next Guggenheim museum could be opened in Istanbul. Mardin doğumlu şair ve yazar Murathan Mungan Mardin’i şöyle anlatır mesela: “Şehirlerin anlamı herkes için farklıdır. Yaşadığın şehir seni biçimlendirir. Mesela Mardin’deki mimari, gözlerimi terbiye etti. Nusaybin ilçesinde bulunan Girnavaz Höyük’de yapılan kazılarda ele geçen Asur Dönemi’ne, yani 7. yüzyıla ait bir meyve bahçesinin satış senedi No one can describe a city better than a person who was born and who grew there. Those who lived there know its morning frost, evening winds, side streets and hills best. For instance, Murathan Mungan, the poet and author who was born in Mardin, describes the city as follows: Cities have a different meaning for everyone. The city where one lives shapes one. For example, the architecture in Mardin trained my eyes. I conveyed the shadow of the light inside myself. Maybe, you do not see that light and shadow while reading my poem, but the light and shadow that brought that poem into existence had drained from Mardin. As Mungan has brilliantly expressed, perhaps, Mardin is a poem. Indeed, Mardin is Southeastern Anatolia’s one of the poetic cities, which gives the impression that the time has stopped, with its architectural, ethnographic, archaeological, historical and visual assets. Mosques, tombs, churches, monasteries and caravanserais are located at the centers of daily life. Thus, people see many historical buildings at any time, live in their shadow, and witness historical and cultural values everywhere and at any time. This is a multi-religious, multi-lingual, multi-cultural city. This is the main source of its wealth. It has been inhabited since 4500 BC. It hosted Subarians, Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Mitannians, Assyrians, Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, Artuqids and Ottomans. Therefore, there is a very rich cultural heritage in the city. The most important ones are the ‘Nomadic Gravestones’. The gravestones found in the Cizre region are very important in terms of representing the influences of the Central Asian Moorland culture, a pastoral culture strongly connected with the natural and rural life. There are many animal pictures on the gravestones. The stones belong to the 11th-14th centuries. Statues of the cult of the dead are situated near Kızıltepe. These statues, which provide important information on the Mesopotamian culture and faith, supposedly were placed into burial chambers and at the entrances of palaces. These are considered protectors of the underworld, and they represent the Assyrians’ ancestors who accept offerings during religious rituals. The first known title deed as well had been found in the territory of Mardin. This document, which is a contract of sale and title deed belonging to the Assyrian Period (7th century) unearthed during excavations at the Girnavaz Mound, Nusaybin, indicates the power of the Assyrian central The adventure of the dove with the humankind began when the dove sent by Noah from the ark, who wanted to find out whether the deluge was over, returned with an olive branch. According to the legend, Semiramis, the Queen of Babylon, came from a dove’s egg. Additionally, dove is the bird of Aphrodite, goddess of beauty. In Christianity, it is a sacred bird that brings the feeling of living fraternally, peace and the happiness of the soul to humans and that carries happiness and love in heaven. According to the Islamic belief, it is an innocent bird, free from every kind of sin. Now the tumbler pigeons of Mardin are the oldest hosts of this city and a complementary element of the architecture. The pigeon motif is common in architecture and in handicrafts. The inhabitants of Mardin have put these pigeons, which are still used as means of communication, under protection to prevent their extinction, and they have been closely involved in their breeding and maintenance. ve tapusu olan bu belge, Asur merkezi otoritesinin gücünü ve bölgenin sosyo-ekonomik yapısının gelişmişliğini anlatıyor. Kırklar (Mor Behnam) Church, Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana) Church, Ulu (Grand) Mosque, Revaklı Bazaar, Kasimiye Medrese, the Old Post Office Building and the ancient city of Dara as well are among the places that must be seen. However, the most important ones are Mardin’s labyrinth-like streets full of stone houses. The houses, which overlook the Mesopotamian plain from a hill, are nested and form rows. The windows, doors and doorknockers are decorated. Even the roofs are uproarious. The people sleep on the roofs during hot nights with plenty of stars, and dry their foodstuff on the roofs. The streets are very narrow. Two people cannot walk side by side, let alone a car. Thus, Mardin’s streets are like hidden passages with great surprises. Here, everyone walks slowly and silently, without hurrying or raising one’s voice. The best thing to do is to get lost in Mardin’s streets. Lean against the stones, which are icecold in summer and warm in winter, and listen to the sounds of the city. Mardin’s museums Mardin is an open-air museum on its own, but one must visit the Mardin Museum and the Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum to understand the historical and cultural importance of the city. The building that houses the Mardin Museum is in fact a monastery building. According to the inscription in the covered portal of the Virgin Mary Church, which is adjacent to the eastern side of the building, facing the museum, the building was built as the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate, by Antakya Patriarch Ignatios Behnam Banni, in 1895. 35 Mardin Müzesi’nde sergilenen 7 bin 500 yıllık oyuncak araba. Kent Müzesi olarak düzenlenen mekan, ince uzun 36 Since 1995, it serves as a museum. Ceramics, seals and cylinder seals, coins, candles, figurines, unguentaria, ornaments and vases belonging to the Early Bronze, Intermediary Bronze, Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages and to the Assyrian, Urartian, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Artuqid and Ottoman Periods are exhibited at the Mardin Museum. While visiting this museum, you can recognize the high development level of silversmithing, one of the most important cultural heritages in Mardin. Not only distinguished examples of silversmithing, peculiar to the Midyat District in particular, such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, frontlets and hair accessories, but also old dresses, swords, coffee (mırra) sets, bath accessories, prayer beads, heating equipments and copperware are exhibited. This museum preserves the traditional values of Mardin, and presents them to the next generations. Additionally, there is a laboratory inside the museum, where artifacts made of gold, silver and ceramic materials are restored. All scientific analyses are conducted here, and the artifacts are repaired in situ. One of the most remarkable components of the museum collection is the Sürekli Hoard unearthed during rescue excavations at the Sürekli Village, Kızıltepe. The hoard includes gold and silver artifacts dating from the 9th-14th centuries and belonging to many civilizations such as those of the Ayyubids, Byzantines, Zengids, Ilkhanids and Jalayirs. The Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum reflects the modern aspects of Mardin. The building of the museum had been used as Cavalry Barracks at first and as the Tax Office Building later. The two-storey building, the ownership of which was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and which is under protection, has been restored by the Sabancı Foundation and converted into a museum and art gallery. After the completion of the restoration of the historical building located in the city center, the museum that was to be housed on the upper floor was named “Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum”, in accordance with Sakıp Sabancı’s will. The gallery established on the lower floor was named “Dilek Sabancı Art Gallery”, for, Dilek Sabancı provided financial support as well as Sakıp Sabancı, and it was inaugurated on October 1, 2009. The museum aims at contributing to the promotion of the historical culture of Mardin accumulated in the course of centuries. The narrow and long space arranged as a city museum consists of display units allowing a lengthwise walk. The main principle of design is reflecting original aspects of the identity of the city. Therefore, the niches in the building have been designed as units containing ‘handicraft’ products. Bienal, Mardinliler’in kent içinde günlük yaşamlarını sürdürdükleri, gezindikleri, çay içtikleri, saç sakal traşı oldukları çeşitli mekanları; tarihi binalardan berber dükkanlarına, kıraathanelerden açık hava sinemasına kadar ilginç mekanları seçerek normal koşullarda bir gezginin giremeyeceği ve deneyimleyemeyeceği şekilde 30 sanatçıya sergi alanı olarak sunuldu. The city has a Biennial now The 2nd Mardin Biennial, supported by the GAP (Southeastern Anatolia Project) Administration, Mardin Governorship and the Promotion Fund of the Prime Ministry, directed by Döne Otyam, and advised by Ayşegül Sönmez, was held between September 21 and 23. This year’s biennial was curated by Paolo Colombo, curator of the 6th İstanbul Biennial, and by Lora Sarıaslan, and the works of artists such as Fikret Atay, Sami Baydar, Edy Ferguson, Mona Hatoum, Hrair Sarkissian, Murat Şahinler, Shahzia Sikander and Pae White were featured. The biennial chose various places used by the inhabitants of Mardin during their daily lives, including historical buildings, barber shops, coffee houses and the outdoor cinema, which would not be visited and experienced by any traveler under normal conditions, and presented them as exhibition areas to the 30 artists. A view of the Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum and gravestones. 38 This is not a museum that only ‘displays’ some things to its visitors. It fits the liveliness and cultural activeness of Mardin. The Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum considers the participation of the people very important, and therefore, it organizes workshops, encourages the restoration of the neighboring buildings, and presents the contemporary to the people by bringing the works of modern artists to the museum. Mardin reportedly has become an active city of culture and arts, since the opening of the museum. Local people say that a vivid lifestyle developed around the museum, and that the nightlife was continuing until late hours. NGOs as well kept pace with the change, and implemented projects such as the local Mardin soap workshop, the telkari (filigree) workshop and the Mardin cuisine workshop supported by the EU. The governorship and the municipality do their best for the inclusion of Mardin, which is on the tentative list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, on the permanent list. 700 buildings will be broken down to make Mardin appear as it was 500 years before, and after the completion of the project, the city will be proposed for addition to the World Heritage Sites list with its appearance of a Medieval city. SECRETS OF A PAINTING Rembrandt’s “Night Watchman” painting is counted among the world’s most prestigious works of art. Its reputation is not solely based on Rembrandt’s unique technique and extraordinary talent, but has something to do with its “secrets”. Rembrandt’ın otoportresi (üstte) ve ‘Gece Bekçisi’ adlı eseri. Self-portrait of Rembrandt (above) and his painting ‘The Night Watch’. 40 41 ir tabloyu görmek için iki farklı ülkede, iki farklı müzeye gidilir mi? Nicolaes Tulp’un Anatomi Dersi’ portfö- 42 Is it common practice to visit two different museums in two different countries to view a painting? This question is answered with “yes” only with regard to one single work of art: Rembrandt’s “The Night Watchman” painting. One of the two versions of the same painting is in the Netherlands and the other in Great Britain. In fact, one of them is merely a “copy”. But the copy shows more than the original. The Night Watchman enigma indeed is a very interesting story. Moreover, the British director Peter Greenaway’s film on the subject matter renders this interesting story even more mysterious. Let us start with Rembrandt’s own story. His full name was Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He was Dutch... He lived between 1606 and1669 during that golden age when Dutch art and science had flourished. He produced works worthy of that era. However, misfortunes did not leave him alone in his personal life. Diseases caused the lost of his very young children. Then, his wife died at a young age. The woman he later shared his life with was excommunicated by the church because of common-law relationship. At the age of 50 Rembrandt went bankrupt. His works were sold by auction. After all these calamities he died on October 4, 1669. The date of his death is known with that precision. But that’s it. His grave is unknown. It is only known that he is buried in any one of Westerkerk’s nameless graves. Rembrandt departed this world as a poor man. However, he left behind a rich portfolio of exceptional worth. One of the masterpieces of the art of painting “The Anatomy Lecture of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” is just one example of the portfolio, just as many of his various paintings related to religious themes. But, this article is on “The Night Watchman” painting and the mystery behind its double exhibition in two different museums. yünden sadece bir örnek. İngiliz sinemacı Peter Greenaway’a göre ‘hayır’. O kadın, Rembrandt’ın komşusu Kemp’in kızıydı ve genelevde çalışıyordu. Sanatçı, genç kadını gece vakti askerlerin arasında resmederek -yönetmen Greenaway’in deyimiyle- bu acı gerçeği ortaya koymak istemişti. Greenaway, iddialarını Rembrandt’ın sonraki yıllarındaki geliş- It was cut down on four sides The “Night Watchman” has been completed in 1642, after several years of hard work. But it reached the attention and the audience it deserves only after Rembrandt’s passing away. The work was transferred to the City Museum in Amsterdam in 1715. But there was a problem. The painting was larger than the exhibition space reserved for it. With its dimensions of 379,5x453,5 cm, the work of art did not fit in the space between the two columns of the museum. Thereupon, in a way deemed acceptable at that time, the painting was truncated from the four corners, to be reduced to the size of 363x437 cm. A few people on the left of the painting and the shaded areas above and below conferring its depth to the artwork fell victim to this operation. But at least, it was put on display at the museum. Nonetheless, another Dutch painter among Rembrandt’s contemporaries, Gerrit Lundens had a more scrupulous approach. Fortunately, he made a copy of the painting in its entirety showing the whole scene. Rembrandt’s “trimmed” original is today exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The copy by Gerrit Lundens is at the National Gallery in London. A true story is narrated Rembrandt is known as the painter of light. The background is always dark in his paintings, as if he had plunged into the darkness to reveal what no one has seen before, by illuminating it through his own Gece Bekçisi’nin 1715 yılında kesilen bölümleri (en üstte) ve Rembrandt’ın diğer eserleri. The parts of The Night Watch cut down in 1715 (uppermost) and Rembrandt’s other works. Kimbilir! Rembrandt sırlarıyla, yerini kimsenin bilmediği bir mezarda yatıyor. O sırların odak noktasındaki tablosu ise, iki müzede birden sergileniyor. Hayranlık duygularıyla izleniyor. light. Does this interpretation bear only an artistic meaning? It is more than that according to the British filmmaker Peter Greenaway. In 2007, Greenaway authored a documentary which might have been the fancy of many for long-time. He turned his camera to the “Night Watchman” and shot almost frame by frame, square by square, the whole painting in detail. He employed himself to solve the mystery of the painting by evaluating some documents and testimonies of which the accuracy could no longer be established with certainty. The claims raised by the controversial documentary shown in many festivals, including in Turkey, are as follows: The painting tells a true story. The commander of the soldiers patrolling in night watch was murdered. But the soldiers described the death as a “training accident” in order to cover up the murder. The British film-maker who investigated the painting like a crime scene investigator, with the help of digital techniques, had found some evidence of this claim. He did not stop there. He solved the mystery of the only female figure in the painting! That woman was the daughter of Rembrandt’s neighbour Kemp and she was working in a brothel. According to director Greenaway, the artist “wanted to put forth this bitter truth” by painting the young woman in the company of the soldiers at night. Greenaway linked his claims to the developments in the last few years of Rembrandt’s life. Rembrandt came from a wealthy family. He did not experience any difficulties up until the time he painted the Night Watchman. However, after that, it seemed as if his life had been plunged downhill. His work was ignored and he was not receiving any new orders. According to the British film-director, Rembrandt “witnessed the murder, revived it in his painting, and because of that, he was dragged into perdition”. Who knows! In addition, there are dozens of his self-portraits. • He is one of the most prolific artists. He produced up to 2 thousand works of art and drawings including 600 oil paintings. • Saskia, the mother of their three deceased children, was modelling for the artist for 8 years until her own death. • “The Anatomy Lecture of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” depicts real people. The principal personality is the then 39 years old Dr. Tulp who is historically known for his contributions in the area of medical research. Besides him, there is only one more doctor among the other persons represented in the painting. Others are a group of “curious wealthy people” from Amsterdam. As for the person who underwent autopsy: it is the convict Aris Kindt who was executed by hanging on charges of armed robbery. The autopsy, which was performed in front of the public, was put on record in drawings by five painters simultaneously including Rembrandt. The only one which reached today is Rembrandt’s work. 45 ARKEOLOJİ Archaeological Yazı-Text Elif Türkölmez 46 konya sınırları içinde yer alan ve neolitik çağ’ın en önemli yerleşim yerlerinden biri olan çatalhöyük, 9 bin yıl önceki anadolu’dan günümüze ışık tutuyor. Environment: a dense forest area harbouring wild animal species like tigers and lions. Hence, houses are built under the ground in order to be protected from the animals i.e., the entrance door is on the ceiling. The institution of marriage and the notion of property are developed. Women are the leading force in the family. Medicine is quite advanced, brain surgeries are performed. The people deal with agriculture. Among them there are also artists. In short, it is a civilization beyond its age. Çatalhöyük is the second oldest yet found Neolithic settlement. The first is Jericho near the Jordan River. All this knowledge is owed to British archaeologist James Mellaart who recently passed away on July 29. Mellaart performed his first excavations here together with his archaeologist colleagues David French and Allan Hall in 1961-1963. The excavations resumed in 1993 and are currently carried out by a mixed team of researchers from Great Britain, Turkey, Greece and the USA, led by Ian Hodder, former Mellaart student at the University of Cambridge. Çatalhöyük has been excavated for so many years and still new finds emanate from the settlement. So, what we’re talking about is really a very rich civilization. Çatalhöyük consists of two mounds side by side, the eastern and the western mounds (çatal is Turkish for “fork”, höyük for “mound”). Buğday, arpa ve bezelye gibi bitkilerin tarımını yapmaya başladıkları, Mellaart banned from Anatolia James Mellaart used to describe himself as “a lover of Anatolia”. He initially participated as a young archaeologist in excavations at Beycesultan in Turkey between 1954 and 1959. The surface research he conducted during this period resulted in the establishment of the locations of the Hacılar and Çatalhöyük settlements. In 1957, he began excavations at Hacılar, followed by the excavations he launched in 1961 at Çatalhöyük, a settlement of great significance for himself and for the world of archaeology. Mellaart made important discoveries at Çatalhöyük on Anatolia’s first sedentary communities. His findings revealed this section of Anatolia as a centre of advanced culture in the Neolithic period. Unfortunately, the Çatalhöyük excavations were interrupted and Mellaart was banned from Turkey for his involvement in the Dorak affair, due to a 1963 article in which he published drawings of supposedly important Bronze Age artefacts that later went missing. The existence of the controversial Dorak Treasury was never clearly established, but Mellaart, who personally introduced Çatalhöyük to the world, was not able to work at the Neolithic Settlement for more than four seasons (1961 and 1965). After the scandal, the site lay idle until 1993. It was a very sad situation for Mellaart, but a bit of his grief subsided when Çatalhöyük was finally inscribed this year on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Between 1961 and 1963 Mellaart gave lectures on the archaeology of Anatolia and the Near East at the University of Istanbul. Mellaart was born 1925 in London. He died in London on July 29, 2012. 50 Cambridge Üniversitesi’nden arkeologlar 1993’ten bu yana kazı çalışmalarını sürdürüyor (üstte solda ve altta). Its location coincides exactly with the Plain of Konya. The main difference from other Neolithic settlements is that Çatalhöyük was developed far beyond the establishment of a rural settlement and reached the stage of urbanization. It is estimated that eight thousand people lived there. The story of its discovery is also interesting. One day in 1958, a shepherd goes to the Konya Plain to graze his sheep. Suddenly the ground under his feet crashes. He falls meters below the earth and is rescued afterwards. Puzzled about the cause of this collapse the public alerts the authorities. Meanwhile, the news reaches London, and a few years later Mellaart sets out to dig in here with his team. Çatalhöyük houses were built very close to each other. However, traces of war or destruction were not observed. This is to say that the congested structure was not based on defence concerns. According to archaeologists, this intertwined structure is to explain with strong family ties, covering many generations. Homes were kept clean and tidy. Roofs were very important in everyday life. As much as they served as streets, it is thought that roofs were also used as the venue for many daily activities such as bread baking and dining, especially on days when the weather was nice. Çatalhöyük houses meant life itself, everything was inside the home. Even the dead were buried into the house. Worshipping gods was also performed at home. In this sense, there was a shrine in every home. The Eastern Mound is known to be the settlement with the oldest sacred structures in Anatolia. Rooms defined as sacred space were more spacious than other rooms in private households. Their wall paintings, reliefs and sculptures were different and more intense than those in other residential rooms. In Çatalhöyük agriculture and animal husbandry were developed. Thanks to the fertile soil in which they lived, they began to carry out the cultivation of wheat, barley and peas. While continuing to perform hunting, they also domesticated cattle. It is thought that salt production from Ilıcapınar was carried out and that production surplus remaining from the use of the town was sold to the surrounding settlements. Sea shells used as jewellery, thought to come from the Mediterranean coast were also found. Pieces of fabric uncovered there are defined as to be the earliest examples of weaving. It seems to be the case that pottery, wood carving, basketry, bone handicrafts, such as the manufacture of tools were also developed. 52 History’s first ‘artists’ were living in Anatolia Another salient characteristic of Çatalhöyük is art. Inner walls of the houses were covered with panels. Some were painted in various shades of red without any decoration. Others were decorated with geometric figures, rug designs, nested circles, stars and floral patterns. Some decorations contained hand and footprints, goddess and human figures, birds and other animals’ depictions, hunting scenes and a wide variety of imagery reflecting the natural environment. Another type of decoration used was the descriptions in relief. Sculptural arrangements composed of bull heads and horns set up on platforms were found in homes as well. Real bull heads coated with clay turned into reliefs adorned the walls of many houses. Some spaces were decorated with continuing series of such figures. Mellaart suggests that these were sacred structures and probably public shrines or houses of worship. The house walls were decorated with depictions of hunting and dancing scenes, pictures of people and animals, pictures of vultures, leopards, various birds, animals such as deer and lions. Moreover, designs termed as rug patterns of 8 thousand 800 years ago present a close resemblance with today’s Anatolian kilims’ patterns. Is it the Mother Goddess or a toy? The figure of the Mother Goddess was important at Çatalhöyük. But let’s say right from the outset that certain scientists doubt the existence in pre-historic times of a goddess cult. According to some, these figures found in tombs might have been toys, magic tools or burial gifts symbolizing the deceased’s spouse. However, many scientists think also that these figurines found in great numbers at Çatalhöyük excavations were indeed Mother Goddess statues. The most famous of them is the ‘Goddess of Çatalhöyük’ in childbirth posture sitting on a couch protected by two leopards next to her. These sculptures are also interpreted as an indicator of a matriarchal society. One Çatalhöyük house’s walls were in fact decorated with female breast pictures. Nevertheless, the nipples of these breasts were in the form of bird’s beaks. This combination of bird beak and breast meant that the goddess gave life as much as she took life. The Goddess of Çatalhöyük was also shown with lions at later periods. Bull was a symbol often used in Çatalhöyük. Its physical and sexual power symbolized masculinity, its rounded forms, its earthen colour and crescent-shaped horns were icons of femininity. Marija Gimbutas, a Lithuanian-American archaeologist known for her research in matriarchal studies argues that the bull’s head symbolizes the womb. Indeed the bull’s head is in the form of uterus. The Taurus horns may emulate the channels leading to the uterus. Beauty is celebrated! Her name means “beauty comes”... Indeed, a very appropriate name. After all, Nefertiti is one of the most beautiful women of all ages. On December 6, 2012, her beauty will be remembered and celebrated once again. ARKEOLOJİ ÖYKÜLERİ Archaeological Stories Nefertiti büstü Berlin’deki Neues Museum’da sergileniyor. The Nefertiti bust is exhibited at the Neues Museum in Berlin. Her kopyasında, karşısındakini o “mesafeli” bakışlarıyla süzdü. Mısır’a gelin geldiğinde Nefertiti adını almıştı. The date is not selected randomly. Exactly 100 years ago, on December 6, 1912, the bust was found at the excavations in the city of Tel Amama by German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt who took his exciting discovery to Germany. Nefertiti, for exactly 100 years since that day, has been greeting her visitors in a Berlin museum. The limestone bust was so fascinating that it was the most copied archaeological artefact in the last 100 years. Through each replica she continued to captivate onlookers with her distant gaze putting forth her strength and power as during her lifetime. Indeed, Nefertiti was a very powerful queen, considered even as the first powerful ruler of ancient Egypt. As wife of Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten), a pharaoh who shared power with her, Nefertiti was taking advantage of the privilege to use all the authority, otherwise incumbent solely upon the sovereign himself, such as imposing punishments. This situation did not please the Egyptian people at all; waves of unrest were spreading all over the country. They blamed the queen of being the mastermind behind Akhenaten’s attempts to transform Egypt’s religion. Although precise findings as to Nefertiti’s origins are not available, she is commonly believed to be an Asian princess. Her real name was Tadukhepa. Nefertiti was the name she received when she came as bride to Egypt. Meanwhile the Pharaoh himself had changed his own name from Amenhotep to Akhenaten. And it meant more than just a name change. The Pharaoh, abandoning the gods of ancient Egypt, began to believe in “one true God”. In this new religion men were circumcised; bathing hands and feet was duty before entering the temple and it was a sin to eat pork. A god, thought to be in the sky was worshiped. This was occurring during the 14th century BC. So neither Moses nor Ramses II were yet born. Monotheism led to unrest in society especially among the clergy who lost their power. Hence, accusing fingers always sought to address Nefertiti, the alien queen from out of Asia. Another cause of blame was the fact that Nefertiti gave birth to 5 children in11 years but all of them girls. Not only was Nefertiti sharing power as a woman with the Pharaoh, but there was also a risk that a woman would sit on the throne after Akhenaten! Would the wrath of the gods of ancient Egypt whose statues and rules were eliminated by Akhenaten not fall on the Egyptians? How could they be safeguarded from all this? The answer was given by an epidemic. It first killed four of the five royal daughters and then Pharaoh Akhenaten. Egyptians had no doubt: this was nothing else than the anger of the gods. Gods put an end to the lives of the Pharaoh and his descendants. A short time later, Nefertiti also died. Records did not indicate the cause of her death. Over the centuries, the epidemic was accepted as the most likely cause of Nefertiti’s demise. But the 21st century brought new clues. In 2002, during excavations at the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, a particular tomb sheltering 1 male and 2 female mummies drew the attention of archaeologists. One of the women held a royal sceptre in her hands and wore an arm band of the kind reserved to pharaohs and queens. The world of archaeology, once again stood up. That mummy, very probably belonged to Queen Nefertiti. And if that tomb at the Valley of the Kings was indeed Nefertiti’s, this discovery was also solving the mystery of her death. The mummy had a deep hole on her skull proving that she was killed hit with a hard object on her head. Thus came probably to an end a rather little known but significant episode of history, which laid the first foundations of a monotheistic religion. Nefertiti lost first her husband Pharaoh Akhenaten and thereafter fell victim to an assassination plot. Following their death, ancient Egypt returned to the polytheistic belief. In December 2012, Berlin will host a very particular celebration. On the occasion of the centennial of the discovery of her bust, Nefertiti, one of the most beautiful and powerful women of all ages will be remembered. One of the Seljuk artifacts exhibited at the Tiled Kiosk Museum, İstanbul. The tile unearthed during the excavations at the Kudabadad Palace, Konya, is dated to the first half of the 13th century. Nowhere in the world is there such a rich “pool of civilizations” as in Anatolia. Since prehistoric times, these lands have been home to dozens of large and numerous small civilizations / kingdoms/ empires. Our museums and archaeological sites are full of the treasures inherited from these civilizations. Some, such as Çatalhöyük, reflect the first traces of the history of mankind. Some give us insight into the Roman Period of Anatolia. Maybe our museums do not appear in the same prestigious lane with the museums in New York, London, Paris or St. Petersburg. Yet, they are superior on one particular count: Anatolian museums do not carry stolen, smuggled or displaced artefacts of other lands, but bring together “artefacts originating from their own Anatolian homeland”. Especially in recent years, thanks to a radical reclaim policy, historical artefacts stolen or moved out of Anatolia are being brought back one by one; so that our historical heritage is being progressively recovered. In this spirit, the “Anatolian Seljuk Civilization Project” has been a very fruitful initiative, carried out under the auspices of President Abdullah Gül. Anatolian Seljuk settlements have been scanned in 49 provinces and 110 cities in Turkey. The conditions of the inns, caravanserais, hospitals, madrasas, mosques, mausoleums, palaces and pavilions of Seljuk heritage have been carefully examined. A comprehensive inventory of the Seljuk Civilization heritage in Anatolia has been drawn up and assembled in an album of 1000 pages in 2 volumes. The album does not only describe monuments and buildings, but dwells upon the social and cultural aspects of the Anatolian Seljuk period as well. They brought along their dragons from Asia Anatolian Seljuks did not only change their own destiny, but exerted a fundamental impact on the fate of Anatolia and even of the entire region today known as the Middle East. While bringing along their own culture, they were introduced to new cultures. This was not a coercive process, but rather a peaceful cultural inter-action, according to scholars in charge of the project. Seljuks had an advanced understanding as to the place and role of women in society. Seljuk women were active members of their communities. Seljuk Turks had a nomadic past. Hence, for example, were they good in livestock breeding. Nevertheless, they adapted themselves in a short time to the sedentary lifestyle and created their own architectural monuments in Anatolia, in the cities where they settled down. While utilizing the urban architectural techniques, they were decorating the buildings with memorabilia from Asia. For example, they adorned palaces and inns with dragon figures quite uncommon for the region. They had brought along from Asia their faith in the protective character of dragons. To these beliefs symbolized by the dragon figure was soon added the Islamic culture. Eventually, Seljuk Turks laid the foundation of a new civilization in Anatolia. Nasreddin Hodja’s “hometown” According to historians, the outbreak of the plague in the European continent was caused by some migrant groups who used the northern route to cross over from Asia to Europe. These historians suggest that the fear of the plague delayed the European Renaissance and dragged the continent into the darkness of the Middle Ages. Quite differently, Seljuks had brought tolerance with them. Even today, those poets and thinkers who come to our mind when we talk about tolerance are the names of that era, such as Rumi, Yunus Emre, 58 figürleriyle süslediler. The preface of the album edited by Prof. Haşim Karpuz and prepared by Ahmet Kuş, Feyzi Şimşek and İbrahim Dıvarcı was written by President Abdullah Gül. The album was published by the Selçuklu Municipality as part of its Cultural Publications. Nasreddin Hodja... And many more! During the Seljuk era, Anatolia experienced its most peaceful period. The ease of trade warranted by a peaceful environment eventually resulted in economic and social development. The Seljuks had also thought of further means to provide support for the development of commerce. They built a myriad of caravanserais on a geography encompassing almost the whole of present-day Turkey, where merchants were allowed to stay free of charge for a few days and, where employees helped them groom their horses and health care workers healed their wounds and diseases. Moreover, the Seljuks who were originally a land community had realized the importance of maritime trade as well and established even a shipyard around present-day Alanya. All of these land and sea trade, besides providing economic wealth, was creating cultural diversity. Probably, therefore, an important part of the Anatolian epics were created during the Seljuk period. Unfortunately, this period lasted only 300 years. Mongolian raids brought to an end the Anatolian Seljuk civilization. The Mongol domination in the “end-stage”destroyed the atmosphere of peace and tolerance which had been created by the Seljuks, Anatolia succumbing once again in its history to chaos and violence. With the death in 1308, of the last Seljuk sovereign, Sultan Mesud II, the Anatolian Seljuk State disappeared definitively from the scene of history; leaving behind a splendid architectural heritage and a rich cultural legacy. BİR ZAMANLAR ANADOLU’DA Türkler’in Anadolu’ya yerleşmesi 1071’deki Malazgirt Savaşı’ndan sonra hızlandı. Selçuklu komutanı Kutalmışoğlu Süleyman Şah, Anadolu’daki fetihleri batıya yayarak 1075’te İznik’i Bizans’tan aldı ve burayı başkent yaparak bağımsızlığını ilan etti. Bilinenlere yepyeni eserler eklendi. Bu arada, Selçuklu arkeolojisinin yetersizliğine vurgu yapılarak yeni projelerin gereğine işaret edildi. ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA The settlement of Turks in Anatolia accelerated following their victory at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. Seljuk commander Kutalmışoğlu Suleiman Shah, spreading the conquest of Anatolia westwards, captured Nicaea (İznik) from Byzantium in 1075 and declared his independence by making the city his capital. The Anatolian Seljuk State continued to exist until 1308. Among the most important surviving examples of Anatolian Seljuk architecture are: Alaeddin Mosque, Karatay Madrasah, Thin Minaret Madrasah in Konya; Alaeddin Mosque in Niğde; Aslanhane Mosque in Ankara; Huand Hatun Mosque and Complex in Kayseri; Grand Mosque in Afyonkarahisar; Twin Minaret Madrasah in Erzurum; Gök(Sky)Madrasah, Buruciye Madrasah and Twin Minaret Madrasah in Sivas; Melik Ghazi Dome in Kırşehir; Mama Hatun Mausoleum in Tercan; Great Vault and Double Vaults in Ahlat; Tuzköy Great Mosque and Kızılkaya Mosque in Nevşehir. However, the “Anatolian Seljuk Civilization Project” which was launched in 2007 and completed at the end of last year resulted in the establishment of a more comprehensive list with the addition of many new monuments. Meanwhile, the insufficiency of the existing Seljuk studies and the need for new research projects with an emphasis on archaeology were underlined. 59 ‘küçük müze’lerin en güzeli MÜZELER Museums serin taş binası, güzel karadeniz manzarası, zengin ceneviz, roma, bizans arşiviyle amasra müzesi, tıpkı adını aldığı kasaba gibi, ‘güzel’... The most beautiful of all small museums With its cool stone building, the beautiful views of the Black Sea, its rich Genoese, Roman, Byzantine archives, the Amasra Museum is as beautiful as the town where it is situated. 60 Amasra’nın genel görünümü, müze bahçesinde sergilenen taş eserler ve müze binası. General view of Amasra, stone artifacts exhibited in the museum garden, and the museum building. Even though Western societies got earlier in touch with this science, Eastern societies are luckier in terms of possessing more artefacts to exhibit. This is why, wherever you go in Turkey, you find archives that are richer than the museums as such. The Amasra Museum is one of those small museums. From the exterior, a modest stone building, but wait until you get inside... The first Amasra Museum was opened in 1955 in a small room in the town hall, thanks to the contributions of the citizens of Amasra. In 1969, as the space in the town hall was getting too narrow, the museum moved to the old elementary school. However, the need for a new and modern museum building became apparent in time. A half completed building originally planned as a future Naval Academy in 1884 by Ismail Kemal Bey, the Governor of Bolu at that time, was purchased in 1975 by the Ministry of Culture. Following completion and necessary reorganization of the building, the current Amasra Museum was inaugurated in 1982. The museum includes four main exhibition halls, two halls being reserved to archaeology and the two others containing ethnographic objects. The First Archaeological Hall houses small Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine artefacts. Tear bottles, gold and bronze ornaments found in graves, terra cotta amphorae and jugs from the sea as well as a variety of other items of the same ages such as fishing hooks, crosses, candles, weapons, utensils, bronze statuettes, gold, silver and bronze coins are on display there. All of these were actually unearthed in the archaeological excavations carried out in the Amasra region. Amasra has a history dating back to the 12th century BC. This is a city which has been home to many civilizations during that period of time. Sesamos was its first name in history. Following the Gasgas (Kaskian) and Hittite domination periods in the region, the city was used as a Exhibit of snake statue and amphora dating from the 2nd century BC. A belt, an embroidered cloth and a lamp exhibited in the Ethnographic Section, and the Carpet Section (right page). Müze, pazartesi hariç her gün 8.00-17.00 arası açık. 64 commercial colony by the Phoenicians. After a short period of Phoenician domination, the city was captured by seamen from Miletus and Megara in the course of the Ionian colonization movements and soon became an important commercial centre of attraction of the whole Western Black Sea coast. Especially the rich forest products, including mainly boxwood, acorns and chestnuts were the most important factor in the development of trade. Remaining under Lydian domination for a period, the city came under Persian sovereignty in the 4th century BC. After Alexander the Great of Macedonia retrieved Anatolia from Persian invasion, Sesamos was ruled by a Persian princess named Amastris. During the time of Amastris, trade was revived and the city experienced the most glorious period of its history. That era was followed by a period of two centuries during which Sesamos was integrated into the Kingdom of Pontus. Finally in 70 BC, the city came under Roman sovereignty. Serving as the capital city of the Roman Province of Paphlagonia, it remained within the boundaries of the Eastern Roman Empire following the division of the Roman Empire in 395. The city, referred to by the name of ‘Amastedos’ during its Eastern Roman era, gradually lost its commercial functions, and has become in particular a religious centre. Later the city remained in the hands of the Genoese until the Ottoman period. Historical treasures from all of these cultures are now on display at the Museum of Amasra. The Second Archaeological Hall is home to marble artefacts from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Genoese periods including sculptures, heads of statues, architectural pieces with reliefs and funerary steles. Ottoman period copper kitchen utensils, weapons, writing sets, candlesticks, seals, scales, ceramics, and rings, as well as bowls made of Amasra region-specific wood are on display in the First Ethnographic Hall. The Second Ethnographic Hall shelters Ottoman period clothes of the region, Qur’ans, silver ornaments, purses, old wall clocks, bedding and pillows. See The Hadrianus Statue Essential and structurally larger works are exhibited in the museum’s garden, including Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman period stone monuments, tombs and sculptures. Amasra Museum is the only archaeological museum in the Western Black Sea region. Of course, only one museum is not sufficient given the potential of the region. As we said above, there are many artefacts available, but not enough space for showcasing all of these. The Hadrianus Statue can be considered as the most important piece in the museum. This statue represents the Goddess of War, Athena on a wolf, returning from a war victory. This is the wolf breast-fed by Romus and Romulus who are said to have founded Rome. A serpent representing Asclepius, the God of Healing is also on display in the museum. The Museum attracts primarily German, French, British, Japanese and Russian tourists showing great interest for its treasures. The museum is open from 8:00 to 17:00 every day except Mondays. This is not a museum sharing the fate of most local museums. Here, both the number of employees and the number of visitors are high. Staff will assist you with answers when you ask a question. Explanations on the items on display as well as catalogues are quite adequate in both Turkish and English. A visit to Amasra which is the centre of attraction of the Western Black Sea coast, with its unique natural beauty, its bays, its seafood and historical sites is a must, including a visit to the Amasra Museum overlooking the beautiful scenery of the Black Sea. When leaving the museum, you feel a sense of happiness. Posters, records, décors used on the sets, costumes, photographs are as many reminders of the fact that ‘a film is never just a movie’; revealing the labour that has been put behind its production. Turkey continues to open up museums worthy of the well-established Turkish film industry. The most important of these, no doubt, is TÜRVAK, welcoming movie fans at its centre in the heart of Yeşilçam. TÜRVAK (Türker İnanoğlu Foundation) was initially established in 1997on a location in Kavacık, by director and producer Türker İnanoğlu, a prominent personality of the Turkish film industry who significantly contributed to the sector since 1957. TÜRVAK which moved to its new venue in Beyoğlu in January 2011 continues to play a leading role in the promotion of cinematographic culture in Turkey. Great support to the archive İnanoğlu who directed and/or produced 280 feature films so far, is offering his private archives to the enthusiasts of film and television history at the TÜRVAK Cinema-Theatre Museum and Art Library. The archives of the ERLER Film Studios, gathered throughout the years of his professional career by Türker İnanoğlu, formed the nucleus of the museum collections. In addition, by advertisements in newspapers, film producers, cinematographers, private collectors, former filmmakers, film-maker families and thespians were called on to report every relevant material they might have in their possession, which the foundation could acquire and include in the collection of the TÜRVAK Museum. It was announced that every available 8, 16 and 35-mm old cameras and movie projection devices, lighting projectors, dollies, trolley cars, studio and laboratory equipment, existing copies of all Turkish movies made to date, scenarios, scripts, banners, pictures, flyers, lobby materials, brochures, advertising materials, books and magazines related to the Turkish film industry since the days of its inception would be purchased and catalogued at the museum. During the establishment phase of the museum, Türker İnanoğlu received significant support from the former General Director of the Turkish Radio and Television Institution (TRT), Yücel Yener, his filmmaker friend, Necip Sarıca, the actress, Handan Uran Ertuğrul, wife of late Turkish theatre veteran Muhsin Ertuğrul, Selçuk Uraz, wife of famous theatre personality actor Ulvi Uraz, his thespian friend Deniz Uyguner and SINE-SEN, the Cinema Workers’ Union. And thus was created that museum which is best-placed to enlighten future generations on the history of the Turkish film industry. An extensive library TÜRVAK Museum does not consist of only a museum of cinematography, there is also a theatre museum in the building. Here too, the costumes and decorations from the archives of the famous dramatists, photographs and video recordings are on display. Another section worth visiting at the institution is the Ulvi Uraz library. With its 60 thousand books rich collection and its comfortable reading room, the library provides a comprehensive cinema, theatre and general cultural archive for students, researchers, authors, academics and writers conducting research in the relevant areas. Tens of thousands of books and magazines on art and general culture, numerous movie soundtrack records of Turkish films, the original film scripts, film agreements, contracts, brochures, flyers, lobbies, thousands of pictures and 67 Müzenin fotoğraf arşivinden görünüm, sinema salonu ve kafeterya. A new innovation called ‘Hidden City’ is introduced within the framework of the ‘Project for the Modernization of Museums’ aiming at making museum visits a part of social life, getting to know the former civilizations of our land, and discovering and preserving our cultural treasure. This game, which will be played on Facebook, will bring fun and knowledge together for history lovers. The ‘Hidden City’ will be available on Facebook before the end of 2012, and the winners will get surprise awards. Another innovation is the ‘vISITANBUL’. An iPhone application intended for foreign guests who are visiting or planning to visit İstanbul is going to be introduced. The free application ‘vISITANBUL’ supporting offline mode will be available in the ‘appstore’s. The ‘vISITANBUL’, which contains information on recommended attractions in İstanbul, such as monuments, museums, religious places, parks, etc., develops daily trip plans for its users, considering the period they will spend in İstanbul and their areas of interest, and allows them to enjoy an efficient holiday travel. Visitors who want to buy tickets and cards from the ticket offices stand in long queues, especially during spring and summer months. However, in order to boost visitor satisfaction, ticketing kiosks that accept cash and credit cards have been designed. Currently, a ticketing kiosk on an area very close to the ticket offices of the Topkapı Palace sells museum tickets.
