Mag. Thomas Welser Issue 01.2016 STEP BY STEP - WELSER FIT As of 1 January 2016, the Welser family business has embarked on a new course. With the programme "Welser FIT" we adopted a new organizational structure to achieve both, reorientation on the market and within the company. Prime targets of the organizational reorientation are to increase competitiveness and to ensure sustainable profitability of the operational business. "The challenges of the market are the day-to-day homework for the whole organization. We have to be receptive for all chances and potentials offered. We must not fail to take every single opportunity to improve. Activity and agility within the whole organisation are the order of the day! If we want to succeed in tackling these challenges, it is mandatory to not only focus on a single location, but implement these objectives all over the Welser Group", emphasizes Managing Director Thomas Welser. FIT FOR THE FUTURE The family is firmly committed to the current changes and strives to keep up and maintain the values lived. Thomas Welser as spokesperson, Christian Hans and Josef Schiller form a strong team at top executive level, accompanied and supported by Helmut Welser and Bernd Wehling until the latter leave the company. The Welser Profile GmbH has been restructured into business units. By means of this reorganisation the focus will shift to the core sectors. Thus, our efforts will concentrate on selected With full speed ahead: Thomas Welser, Josef Schiller und Christian Hansl (from left to right). product segments to improve the service level in a target-oriented way. In order to further enhance the efficiency of our processes in future, our main focus will rest on the development of highly skilled workers. Business-Unit 1: Global Accounts: Thomas Welser Business-Unit 2: Account Management: Oliver Sonst The abbreviation FIT stands for focus, information and transformation and it refers to the implementation of the current organizational changes. The program will be put into practice within the next three years. The decisions taken were based on an analysis carried out by a renowned business consulting firm last year. In the course of this project a few customers and non-customers were consulted to answer questions about the cooperation, the problems and positive sides of our company. One thing is certain: We will continue to run Welser as a family business. COOPERATION WELSER-WUPPERMANN In future Welser and Wuppermann pool their interests with respect to flat products in Hungary. Similar to Welser, Wuppermann is a family-run business in the steel processing industry, represented by its fifth generation with its headquarters in Leverkusen (FRG). To take adequate account of the recent developments on the European The Wuppermann-Group builds four logistics and production halls with a total surface of about 32.000 m2at a building plot of 80.000 m2. steel market, Welser and Wupperman extend their long-lasting cooperation by forming a joint venture. Welser Profile acquires an interest of 25.1 percent in Wuppermann Hungary Kft. (WH). Purpose of this strategic partnership is among other reasons the joint purchase of hot-rolled strips and a shared coil yard at the site of Gönyű (at the river Danube, close to Győr). In a combined production process the flat products are dyed and / or galvanized or - upon request - they may also be skin passed or cold-rolled. As a result Welser and Wuppermann will not only dispose of the most efficient coil line all over Europe with a production capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year, but also will be able to notably reduce procurement times when compared to conventional steel routes; all this to the benefit of Welser customers in the project business line. This investment shall notably strengthen Welser’s competitive position in the European market for cold-rolled profiles and welded tubes, thus, ensuring further growth. Short retooling times ensure that the coil line can also be used for pickling or pickling plus galvanizing of wide strip in lots. The line is equipped with an alternate immersion system with one immersion container prepared for Z (ZnAl-alloy) and the other one for zincmagnesium (ZnMg-alloy). As a consequence, in future Welser will be able to react in a more flexible way to individual customer requirements (different quality levels, surface finishes, coating layers and thickness tolerances). Meanwhile, the antitrust agency has approved the joint venture in full. From the current point of view, it is planned to commence operation of the hot strip pickling and galvanizing plant in the fourth quarter of 2016. As of 2017, Welser intends to obtain pickled or galvanized slit strips from WH. NEWSFLASH WELSER PROFILE WELSER PROFILES FOR REFUGEES WITH WELSER PROFILES FROM LYSTRUP TO AARHUS In Berlin, accommodation containers were made available to people in need and profiles made by Welser played a supporting role. Welser Profile accompanies us from the early morning until late in the night, either close to us or abroad. Within a few months one of our customers succeeded in building accommodation for 2,400 refugees. Aarhus is the second biggest city in Denmark and Lystrup is about 10 km away. These two cities are connected via a railway system, where “Tango”, the low floor tram with longitudinal bearers made by Welser Profile has been put in operation some time ago. The profiles made of stainless steel are welded together to reach the required length of 6.5 metres. 40 YEARS WELSER IN SWITZERLAND: A REASON TO CELEBRATE The Welser family congratulated Marco Forster and his dedicated team and wished them a lot of success for the future. The success story of Welser Switzerland started on 1 May, 1975. The Welser AG was founded at a notary’s office in Arbon, in the presence of Waltraud and Josef Welser and Hermann Forster. Although a little bit delayed, the 40th anniversary was celebrated accordingly together with long-term customers. Even representatives of the first Swiss customers pleased us and enjoyed the evening in a pleasant atmosphere. The technological innovation of this project consisted in additional laser welding in order to increase durability of the welding seam. This is how our profiles contribute to the high level of comfort of this tram line. © Image: Walter Group The required values for statics were ensured through corner columns consisting of steel profiles and longitudinal beams, both made by Welser. Besides the tight specifications with respect to pre-load and suspension, the focus was above all put on requirements for surface treatment, as the profile was subject to immersion coating after production to fulfil aesthetic aspects and offer the corrosion protection needed. RP-HERMETIC FINELINE IN THE SEINE NEW CONSTRUCTION OF THE SPA AND BATHING WORLD EUSKIRCHEN Last summer, a new excursion boat named "Rosa Bonheur sur Seine" was inaugurated to revive the river banks of the Seine. The main part of the façade structure – 5,500 m2 – has been built with the add-on system RP-tec 50-1. The former freight-barge was subject to complex refurbishment - and nowadays the "Rosa Bonheur" mainly consists of steel and glass. The interior is surrounded by a glass façade resting on very slim steel profiles. The decision to use an add-on construction made of steel has been taken on purpose, as this allows for wider spans which on turn ensures more light to enter and gives the impression of transparency. Moreover, the use of a steel construction creates the impression of high quality. The RP-hermetic FINELINE profile with only 36 mm of visual width is nearly predetermined for this kind of use as this system is mainly used for make-overs of historical buildings. Moreover, six doors of the series RP-hermetic 55N were built in. The door system, which is easyto-process yet functional and has no thermal insulation, blends perfectly into the overall design. An architectural highlight of the whole building is the enormous glass roof with a glass dome of 200 tonnes of weight, which may be opened at the touch of a button on warm days, allowing that visitors may enjoy beautiful summer days in open air. ANNIVERSARY: THE BILLIONTH FRAME DELIVERED The production of the billionth frame for one of our long-term customers was reason for a celebration at the Welser AG (Switzerland) and will be well remembered for a long time. Of course, this special occasion was reason to celebrate accordingly. This is why the billionths frame was handed over in the course of an event in our Swiss branch office with about 90 employees participating from both companies. A journey through the course of the time accompanied by interviews presented the initiation of the business relationship decades ago, as well as joint technical developments and the status quo of our successful cooperation. However, the main attraction of the evening was a very special “guest of honour”. The billionth frame was handed over by Thomas and Andreas Welser and by Christian Hansl to the customer in a solemn ceremony together with a delivery note made of stainless steel in an artfully forged frame. The customer received the present with great pleasure before the official part of the celebration ended and the fun part started. AIMING HIGH WITH WELSER PROFILES For our German customer Magirus we delivered profiles for the highest turntable ladder worldwide with a total height of 68m. Our vendors Johannes Deichsel (right) and Gregor Lippold (left) thanked Heiner Hörsch (design turntable ladders, 2nd on the right) and Daniel Riedmüller (purchase) for the excellent cooperation. WELSER WORLD NEWSFLASH WELSER PROFILE SUCCESSFUL TRADE FAIR AT THE BAUMA 2016 MORE INNOVATION FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY THE WHO IS WHO OF THE WORLD OF RAILS WELSER VOCATIONAL TRAINING IS TOP LEVEL Our concept for the fair stand was an eyecatcher for the interested target audience and it was enthusiastically received. At the Swissbau in Basle there was a special demand for combined solutions of profiles for prefabricated modules. The 4th railway forum in Berlin offered opportunities for networking, showed trends and addressed the challenges of the future. Our process technician is among the best junior staff of Germany. Although Swiss business activities in the construction sector slightly decreased since the record year 2014, this keeps to be a hot topic. During five days Basle once again was the meeting point and innovation platform of the construction sector. From 11 to 17 April, 2016 and after a longer absence we were present again at the Bauma, the leading trade fair worldwide for construction machinery, building materials machinery, machines for mining, construction vehicles and construction equipment. First and foremost, our stand mainly aimed at attracting established customers, however, it also captured the attention of new customers due to its special design - it was closed on all four sides. The big lounge offered the possibility for in-depth discussions between customers and interested visitors. Dr. Lutz Bertling is director of Bombardier Transportation with its more than 40.000 employees. He talked about digitalization of the railway industry. This year’s Swissbau attracted young, interested people to visit In December 2015, the honouring ceremony of the best trainees from Germany took place in Berlin. Among the honoured trainees, for the third time there is also one from Welser. Our training coordinator was present, when 23-year old Tim from Lünen received the award from the president of the German Chambers for Industry and Trade (DIHK) and the Federal Minister for Justice and Consumer Protection in a solemn ceremony. More than 500 delegates - from the Chinese CRRC to the American Milwaukee Composites - followed the discourses attentively which mainly focused on digitalization and globalization this year. our stand. Students from a big variety of domains showed particular interest in the possibilities offered at Welser. The combination of steel profiles with other construction materials seems to be the trend in prefabricated modules. Now, the challenge is to elaborate on these findings of the market to convert them into business projects. Among other speakers, speeches were delivered by Dr. Rüdiger Grube, Chief Executive Officer of the Deutschen Bahn or Dr. Lutz Bertling, president of the Canadian Bombardier Transportation. In the workshops, held in parallel to the conference, and in group works held to various railway related topics, the presenters went straight to the point.
