Two of the news briefs are linked; the donations of snowflakes to Sandy Hook and the work on gun control measures. For older students, ask them to integrate the information from these two texts, as well as stories they can research in the Detroit Free Press and News and other media, in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. ANIMALS CCS 3: Explore the story and then the animal diversity web site with your students. You can divide students into groups with a different animal assignment to research on the web. Ask them to explain the procedures, ideas, or concepts in a scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text. ART CCS 2 and CCS 9: Read with your students the story about artist and author Kadir Nelson and the story about the exhibit at the Wright Museum. Ask them to determine the main idea of the text; summarize the story. How is the piece on "Visions of Our 44th President" related to Kadir Nelson? What facts did your students learn about Mr. Nelson? Create a Post-it note message wall in your classroom and ask students to write notes to President Obama as he begins his second term of office. Keep your messages posted through President's Day.
