Sagalassos Yakınlarındaki Kaya Kült Alanında Kurtarma Kazıları Salvage Excavations at a Rock Sanctuary near Sagalassos Peter TALLOEN – Jeroen POBLOME – Hacı Ali EKINCI Giriş* Introduction* 2014 Haziran araştırma sezonunda kazı deposundaki terrakotta figürinler yayın hazırlığı için gözden geçirildi. During the study campaign of June 2014 the collection of terracotta figurines from Sagalassos, stored in the depots of the excavation house, was reviewed for publication. These included a group of Roman Imperial terracotta figurines confiscated in 1991 from illegal excavations in the vicinity of Sagalassos. Upon inquiry as to the exact origin of these figurines, team members of the Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project were taken by a local shepherd to a location some 600 m. to the south-east of Sagalassos, immediately beside the modern road leading to the ancient site, where the illegal excavations would have taken place. This location proved to be a rock outcrop with a large gallery-shaped crevice in the slope of the mountain (Fig. 1), which has largely collapsed. This cave-like complex was accessible from the south and displayed traces of ancient stone carving (Fig. 2). Yarığın içinde ve civarında yüzeyde bol miktarda görülen malzemeler, bu alanı terrakotta figürinlerin geldiği yer olmasının yanı sıra, kullanıma ilişkin in situ izleriyle de kentin yakınında tespit edilen ilk antik kült yeri olarak doğrulamıştır. Dolayısıyla buraya “Kaya Kült Alanı” (KKA) adı verildi. The abundant presence of artefacts on the surface, both within the crevice as in its immediate surroundings, confirmed this site as the origin of the terracotta figurines and also identified it as an ancient cult location, the first one near the city to yield in situ traces of its use. Accordingly, it was designated as “Rock Sanctuary” (RS). Lokasyonun, kentteki ve tüm Pisidia’daki antik dinsel uygulamaların anlaşılması için taşıdığı önemin yanı * Our research was supported by the Belgian Programme on Interuniversity Poles of Attraction (IAP 07/09), the Research Fund of the University of Leuven (GOA 13/04), and Projects G.0562.11 and G. 0637.15 of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). We would like to thank the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, its Cultural Heritage and Museums General Directorate and its representative A. Given the importance of the site for understanding ancient religious practices in the city and the whole of Pisidia, as well as the fact that it is easily accessible for clandestine activities, as attested by previous illegal excavations, permission was sought for immediate scientific investigation of the sanctuary in the form of a rescue excavation in collaboration with the Museum of Burdur. İznin gelmesiyle birlikte ağustos ayının üçüncü haftasında, ekip üyeleri inceleme yapmak ve geri kalan eserleri ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla alanda çalışmaya başladı. Upon receiving permission from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, team members of the Sagalassos Project returned to the site during the third week of August in order to closely investigate the area and retrieve what was left of the artefacts. Ön Sonuçlar Kült alanı kompleksinin kuzeyinde, çok sayıda kaçak kazı çukurunun görüldüğü “Kuzey Zonu” ve alanın giriş kısmında “Güney Zonu” olmak üzere iki ana çalışma alanı belirlendi. Preliminary Results Two main working areas were distinguished: a “North Zone” at the northern end of the sanctuary complex where numerous traces of illegal excavation were present and a “South Zone” that encompassed the entrance to the site. The South Zone encompassed a space which most probably constituted the entrance to the sacred site and so was designated “Room 1”. This roughly rectangular “room” with a south-east-north-west orientation had a length of 4.15 m. and a width of 1.20 m. Its walls had been partly carved out of the limestone rock (Fig. 3). The surface of this space was littered with ceramics, including pottery dating between ca. 200 B.C. and 250 A.D., as well as some Byzantine sherds. Huge amounts of fragmentary terracotta figurines were retrieved (Fig. 4), mainly representing different types of the goddess 2 KAZI RAPORLARI EXCAVATION REPORTS Res. 3 “Mekân 1” içerisinde yüzeyde keramik ve terra kotta fragmanları Fig. 3 Pottery and terracotta fragments on the surface inside “Room 1” Res. 4 “Mekân 1”den terra kotta figürinler (Aphrodite Anadyomene?, Aphrodite strophion, Aphrodite ve Eros, Athena, Hygieia, Tithe, bir kadın büstü, Hermes) Fig. 4 Terracotta figurines from “Room 1” (Aphrodite Anadyomene?, Aphrodite strophion, Aphrodite and Eros, Athena, Hygieia, Tyche, bust of a woman, Hermes) Diğer buluntular arasında cam kaplara ait parçalar (M.S. 1. yy.’a tarihlenen millefiori kaba ait parçalar dahil), hayvan kalıntıları (tavuk, köpek, kedi, kaplumbağa, keçi, koyun, boynuzlu tilki, porsuk), balık kılçıkları ve bir deniz kabuğu sayılabilir. Aphrodite (such as anadyomene, genetrix, Knidian, pudica and strophion). Other represented female deities included Athena, Hygieia, Isis, Kybele and Tyche, while numerous fragments of busts of female figures were also present. Male deities were limited to the child-god Eros and Hermes. Further finds included sherds of glass vessels (including fragments of a 1st century A.D. millefiori vessel), animal remains (of chicken, dog, cat, turtle, goat, sheep, bovid fox, badger), fish bone and a sea shell. Dolayısıyla, “Mekân 1”in üst tabakalarında ele geçen objelerin çoğunluğunun aslında “Mekân 3”ten akmış olduğu düşünülmektedir. Underneath we exposed a 0.20 m. thick deposit of previously excavated material, with again large amounts of fragments of pottery and terracotta figurines dating to the same periods. This deposit was sloping down towards the south into the corridor-like space “Room 1” over a length of 2.10 m. from an adjacent space, designated “Room 3”, which could not yet be accessed. This was situated on top of a 0.23 m. thick deposit, with many animal remains as well as displaced ceramic material originating from the adjacent northern space, which was sloping down over the bedrock wall at the northern end of the “room”. This suggests that most of the artefacts found in the top layers of “Room 1” in fact originated in “Room 3”. “Mekân 1”in kuzey ucunda, düşmüş bir kireçtaşı bloğunun yanında küçük bir çukur içinde 0,40 m. kalınlığında bir dolgu kazıldı. Burada ele geçen 12.-13. yy.’lara ait Orta Bizans keramiği (bir pişirme kabına ait parçalar da dahildir) yanı sıra hayvan kemikleri, kül ve odun kömürü mağarada yemek pişirildiğine işaret etmektedir. Çukurun kazıldığı taban altlığında Orta Bizans Dönemi’ne ait keramik malzeme saptandı (Res. 5). Daha alt tabakalarda henüz kazı yapılmamıştır. The underlying compact deposit (with an average thickness of 0.16 m.) was most probably a substrate of an ancient walking level. Its ceramic content was mixed, including material ranging between ca. 200 B.C. and 250 A.D., as well as some Byzantine sherds, but with far fewer figurine fragments compared to the overlying deposits. 3 KAZI RAPORLARI EXCAVATION REPORTS At the northern extremity of “Room 1” the 0.40 m. thick fill of a small pit arranged against a fallen limestone block was excavated. The content of this fill included sherds of Middle Byzantine pottery (including fragments of a cooking pot) dating to the 12th-13th century A.D., as well as animal bone, ash and charcoal, which suggest cooking activity in the cave. The floor substrate into which the pit was dug again contained ceramic material dating to the Middle Byzantine period (Fig. 5). The underlying deposits have not yet been excavated. Res. 5 “Mekân 1”deki taban altlığından Orta Bizans Dönemi keramikleri Fig. 5 Mid-Byzantine pottery from the floor substrate in “Room 1” North Zone The North Zone of the excavation, situated at the northern end of the Rock Sanctuary, encompassed a second space, designated “Room 2”, as well as the area outside the crevice immediately to the north. Kuzey Zonu KKA’nın kuzey ucunda yer alan Kuzey Zonu kazısında “Mekân 2” adı verilen bir başka mekân ve hemen kuzeydeki yarığın dışındaki alan açığa çıkartıldı. The area outside “Room 2”, formed by the sloping surface of the rock outcrop, was covered with debris from illegal excavations, again including numerous fragments of terracotta figurines mainly representing the goddess Aphrodite besides the other aforementioned goddesses, as well as pottery dating to the period between ca. 200 B.C. and 250 A.D., as well as some Mid-Byzantine material (8th to 13th centuries A.D.). This material appears to have been removed from inside the “room”. Unlike “Room 1”, “Room 2” did not display signs of stone carving nor was it accessible through a purposemade entrance; rather one needs to crawl into the cavity from above. It may therefore have resulted from natural processes which created a roughly triangular space with an apex oriented to the south-east, sides of 2.00 to 2.20 m., and a base (on the north-west) with a length of ca. 1.00 m. (Fig. 6). Additional crevices were present on the east and west sides. Malzemenin kronolojisi ve tipolojisi “Mekân 1”in dışında ele geçenlerle benzeşir. Daha alt seviyede yine benzer keramik ve figürin parçası içeren önceki kazı atıkları ele geçti. Mekânın doğu kesimindeki bir yarıkta her nasılsa kaçak kazıcıların el sürmediği bir dizi dolgu saptandı. Dolgunun, yaklaşık 0,30 m. kalınlığındaki üst tabakasında keramik, terra kotta figürin parçaları, cam kaplara ait parçalar ve kemikten saç iğnesi parçaları dahil Hellenistik ve Roma İmparatorluk dönemlerine ait malzeme bulundu (Res. 7). Bu tabakanın altındaki dolguda yer alan keramik buluntular Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’ne, özellikle geç 1. yy. - 2. yy.’a tarihlenmektedir ve bu grubun içinde hemen Res. 6 “Mekân 2”nin kuzeyden görünüşü Fig. 6 View of “Room 2” from the north 4 KAZI RAPORLARI EXCAVATION REPORTS The surface material inside the space consisted of objects previously unearthed by illegal excavations and included large amounts of pottery and fragments of terracotta figurines. The chronology and typology of the artefacts was comparable to the material found outside the space and in “Room 1”. Underneath, a deposit of previously excavated material was found, with a similar ceramic content of pottery and figurine fragments. In a crevice in the eastern part of the “room” a sequence of deposits was found which appears to have been untouched by the illegal excavations. The ca. 0.30 m. thick top soil present in this part of the “room” contained Hellenistic and Roman Imperial period artefacts, including pottery and terracotta figurines, as well as fragments of glass vessels and bone hair pins (Fig. 7). Res. 7 “Mekân 2”den kemik saç iğnesi parçaları Fig. 7 Fragments of bone hairpins from “Room 2” Res. 8 “Mekân 2”den terra kotta Aphrodite Anadyomene figürini Fig. 8 Terracotta figurine of Aphrodite Anadyomene from “Room 2” It was covering a compact deposit of colluvium of which the ceramic contents could be dated to the Roman Imperial period, more specifically to the late 1st-2nd century A.D. A concentration of artefacts within this deposit included an almost complete terracotta figurine of Aphrodite anadyomene (Fig. 8). Conclusion In spite of much illegal digging, which destroyed large parts of the archaeological record, the rescue excavation at the Rock Sanctuary produced unexpectedly rich results, informing us about the historical use of the cave-like complex and the nature of the ancient activities taking place there. Based on the artefacts retrieved at the site – both from the surface and from stratified deposits – the rock crevice appears to have been in use from the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. until the 13th century A.D., interrupted by a period of relative abandonment during Late Antiquity (from the second half of the 3rd to the 8th centuries A.D.) which produced only few finds. hemen eksiksiz bir terra kotta Aphrodite anadyomene figürini yer almaktadır (Res. 8). Sonuçlar The finds made at the site hint at the religious character of this use during Antiquity, as evidenced by the huge number of terracotta figurines (thousands of fragments) which were deposited as votive offerings. These gifts included numerous figurines of the goddess Aphrodite, often accompanied by the child-god Eros. The presence of other female deities like Athena, Hygieia, Kybele, Tyche and Isis, as well as numerous busts of female figures, compared to a relatively low number of adult male figures (Hermes being the main representative), suggest that womanhood was the main focus of the cult taking place there. Other objects, such as glass beads Arkeolojik malzemenin büyük parçalarına zarar vermiş olan yoğun kaçak kazılara karşın, KKA kurtarma kazılarında beklenmedik zenginlikte buluntular ele geçmiş ve mağara benzeri kompleksin tarihsel kullanımı ve burada gerçekleşen antik etkinlikler hakkında bilgi sağlanmıştır. Yine kolye ve bileziklere ait cam boncuklar, saç iğnesi gibi işlenmiş kemik objeler ve diğer buluntular da kadınlarla ilintilendirilebilir. of necklaces or bracelets, and worked bone objects like hair pins could also be associated with women. The presence of pottery table ware, glass vessels, storage and cooking ware, on the other hand, suggests the organisation of meals at the sanctuary, though the disturbed nature of the deposits (with modern faunal remains contaminating the ancient ones) did not allow a reconstruction of the nature of these ancient meals. The absence of elements of monumental architecture or sculpture at the rock outcrop clearly distinguishes this cult setting from the opulent sanctuaries in the urban centre devoted to the official cults of the polis of Sagalassos. Rather we appear to be dealing here with a sacred location rooted in popular belief, where women and their families came to contact their divine protectors and address issues of health and fertility as part of daily religious practice. Pişmiş toprak yemek kapları, cam kaplar, depolama ve pişirme kaplarının da ele geçmiş olması kült alanında yemek düzenlendiğini akla getirmesine karşın, dolguların önceden kazılmış olması ve yakın dönemlere ait hayvan kalıntılarının yarattığı kirlilik nedeniyle bu eski yemeklerin özelliklerini saptamak mümkün ola mamıştır. The cult site appears to have gone out of use in Late Antiquity, probably as a result of the rise of Christianity which caused the abandonment of the pagan sanctuaries, only to be used again during the Mid-Byzantine period, possibly as a kind of shelter as suggested by the remains of a fireplace in “Room 1”. Sahada bir anıtsal mimari veya yontu örneklerinin olmaması, bu kült alanını, Sagalassos kent merkezindeki resmi kültlere ayrılan gösterişli kült alanlarından farklı kılmaktadır. Burada halk inancında kök salmış, günlük dini uygulamalarda kadınların ve ailelerinin tanrısal koruyucularıyla temas ettiği, sağlık ve kısırlık konularında danıştığı bir kutsal alan söz konusudur. It is hoped that research at this site can be continued in the near future and provide us with more detailed information on its structure and chronology, as well as the cult and the religious practices taking place there. 6
