YABANCI DİL II YILDIRAY KURNAZ ÜNİTE 11 Modals (2) MODALS (2) İngilizce’de kipler (Modals) izin (permission), beceri (ability), zorunluluk (obligation), yasaklama (prohibition), tavsiye (advice), rica (request), teklif/öneri (offer), geçmiş alışkanlıklar (past customs) , gelecek planlar (future plans) , ve ihtimal (possibility) gibi durumlardan bahsetek için kullanılır. Bu kapsamda İngilizce’de kullanılan kipler şunlardır: can, could, may, might, be able to, will, should, had better, must, have to, would ve used to. Bu ünitede öğrenilecek olan kipler should / had better / must / have to / would / used to kipleri (modals)’dir. Bu kiplerin her birinin kullanımınlarına ayrı ayrı değinilirse: 1. Should Advice (Tavsiye) Örnek •- Should we follow these instructions? (Bu yönlendirmeleri takip etmeli miyiz? - Yes, you should. / No, you should not (shouldn’t). •Mr. Brown, your son should study more. He isn’t good enough at his lessons. (Bay Brown, oğlunuz daha çok çalışmalıdır. O, derslerinde yeterince iyi değil.) •Hey guys! You should take your coats. It may rain. (Hey millet! Montlarınızı almalısınız. Yağmur yağabilir.) 2. Had Better Strong advice ( güçlü tavsiye) Örnek •-Had he better follow you or can he go on his own? (O, seni takip etmeli mi yoksa kendi başına gidebilir mi? Yes, he had better. / No he had better not. •You had better stop smoking or your illness will kill you. (Sigara içmeyi bırakmalısın yoksa hastalığın seni öldürecek.) •You had better drive slowly. We may have an accident. Because it is icy outside. (Yavaş sürmelisin. Kaza yapabiliriz. Çünkü dışarısı buzlu.) •We had better not sleep late. We have an exam tomorrow. (Geç uyumamalıyız. Yarın sınavımız var.) Bayburt Üniversitesi Uzaktan Eğitim Merkezi 2 Modals (2) 3. Must Obligation (Zorunluluk) Örnek • You must come back home before 10:00 p.m. (Gece 10:00'dan önce eve geri dönmelisin.) • Angela must cook the dinner. It’s her turn today. (Yemeği Angela pişirmeli. Bugün onun sırası.) Prohibition (Yasaklama) Örnek •You mustn’t park your car here. (Arabanı buraya park etmemelisin.) •They mustn't smoke in closed areas. (Kapalı alanlarda sigara içmemeliler.) •Drivers mustn't pass when the red light is on. (Kırmızı ışık yandığında sürücüler geçmemeli.) •A country's warcraft mustn't violate another country's borders without permission. (Bir ülkenin savaş uçağı izni olmaksızın bir başka ülkenin sınırını ihlal etmemeli.) Logical Conclusion (Mantıksal Çıkarım) Örnek •Jonathan’s car is in front of his home. He must be at home. (Jonathan'ın arabası evinin önünde. Evde olmalı.) •Michael is still sleeping. He must be really tired. (Michael hala uyuyor. Çok yorgun olmalı.) •He studied really hard and the exam was really easy. He must get a good grade. (O, çok sıkı hazırlandı ve sınav oldukça kolaydı. Yüksek bir not almalı. •Putin looks angry nowadays. There must be problem. (Putin son günlerde oldukça sinirli görünüyor. Ortada bir sorun olmalı.) Bayburt Üniversitesi Uzaktan Eğitim Merkezi 3 Modals (2) 4. Have To Obligation (Zorunluluk) Örnek •Most high school students have to wear uniform in Turkey. (Çoğu lise öğrencileri Türkiye'de üniforma giymek zorundadır.) •My sister is at high school and she has to wear uniform. (Benim kız kardeşim lisededir ve o üniforma giymek zorundadır.) •I had to wear uniform when I was at high school. (Ben lisedeyken üniforma giymek zorundaydım.) No obligation (Zorunluluk olmaması) Örnek •University students don’t have to wear uniform. (Üniversite öğrencileri üniforma giymek zorunda değiller.) •My brother is at university. He doesn’t have to wear uniform at school. (Benim erkek kardeşim üniversitede. O, okulda üniforma giymek zorunda değil. ) •I didn’t have to wear uniform when I was at university. (Ben üniversitedeyken üniforma giymek zorunda değildim.) *** Must / Mustn’t / Have to (don’t have to) modallarının kullanımı sıklıkla karıştırılan bir husustur. O yüzden bu konunun akrşılaştırılmalı olarak ele alınması uygundır. Öncelikle şu belirtilmedir ki hem must hem de have to ‘zorunluluk’ anlamı verir. Birbirlerinden farkları have to modalının daha resmi bir anlam içermesi. Örneğin, bir babanın oğluna bir zorunluluk koşması must modalı kullanılarak ifade edilirken, (Yu must study lesson now! Derhal dersini çalışmalısın), bir patronun bir çalışanına bir zorunluluğunu belirtmesi daha resmi bir mana içerdiğindenn have to modalı ile kullanılır (You have to be at work before 08:00 a.m every morning Her gün saat 08:00’dan önce işte olmalısın). Yasak-Zorunda olmama hususunda daha dikkatli olunması gerekmektedir. Bir şeyin yasak olduğu belirtilirken resmi olup olmaması önemsenmeksizin her daim mustn’t modalının kullanılması gerekmetedir (You mustn’t walk on the grass. Çimlerin üzeridne yürümemelisin / You mustn’t be late for the work. İşe geç kalmamalısın). Resmi olan durumlarda zorunda olmama anlamını verirken have to modalının olumsuzuymuş gibi Bayburt Üniversitesi Uzaktan Eğitim Merkezi 4 Modals (2) algılanan don’t have to yapısının kullanılması sık yapılan bir hatadır (You don’t have to be late for work. İşe geç kalmak zorunda değilsin.-X-). Çünkü don’t have to ifadesi cümleye bir eylemin yapılmaması gerektiği değil, yapılmak zorunda olunmaması anlamını verir (You don’t have to come to work at the weekend. Haftasonu işe gelmek zorunda değilsin). Karşılaştırılmalı olarak bir trafik ışığı örneğinde incelenecek olursa: Örnek •Drivers have to stop when the red light is on. (Kırmızı ışık yandığında sürücüler durmak zorundadırlar.) •Drivers mustn't pass when the red light is on. (Kırmızı ışık yandığında sürücüler geçmemelidirler.) •Drivers don't have to stop when the green light is on. (Yeşil ışık yanarken sürücüler durmak zorunda değildirler.) 5. Would Offer (teklif) Örnek •Would you like some coffee? (Biraz kahve ister misin/iz)? • - Would you like to drink some coffee? (Biraz kahve içmek istermisin/iz) - Yes, I would like (to). •Would you like to come with us? (Bizimle gelmek ister misin?) Polite Request (Rica) Örnek •I would like a cup of coffee please. (Bir fincan kahve rica edebilir miyim lütfen.) •I would like to drink a cup of coffee please. (Bir fincan kahve içmek isterim lütfen.) •She wouldn’t like to go out with you. Please don’t insist. (Seninle dışarı çıkmayı istemiyor. Lütfen ısrar etme.) •Would you please be quite? (Lütfen sessiz olur musunuz?) Bayburt Üniversitesi Uzaktan Eğitim Merkezi 5 Modals (2) *** Would you mind yapısı kullanılarak yapılan rica cümlelerine ayrıca değinmek gerekir. Eğer bir işin yapılması istenirken, birinin (konuşmacı da olabilir) o işi yapması için karşıdakinden müsaade etmesi istenirse Would you mind if (someone) + (did) + (something) yapısı kullanılır. Eğer bir işin yapılması istenirken, karşıdakinin o işi yapması istenirse Would you mind (Ving) kallıbı kullanılır. Örnek •Would you mind if I opened the window? (I want to open) (Camı açmamın senin için bir mahsuru var mıdır?) (Ben açmak istiyorum.) •Would you mind if he joined the club? (Onun kulübe katılmasının senin için bir mahsuru var mıdır?) •Would you mind opening the window? (I want you to open) (Rica etsem camı açar mısın?) (senin açmanı istiyorum) •Would you mind joining the club? (Rica etsem kulübe katılır mısın?) 6. Used To Past Customs (Geçmiş alışkanlıklar) Örnek •- Did you use to play hide and seek when you were a child - Yes I did. / No, I didn’t. (Sen çocuk iken saklambaç oynar mıydın?) •I used to play hide and seek when I was a child. (Ben çocuk iken saklambaç oynardım.) •I didn’t use to play hide and seek when I was a child. (Ben çocuk iken saklambaç oynamazdım.) •He used to study hard when he was younger. He is a lazy student now. (O daha genç iken daha sıkı çalışırdı. Şimdi tembel bir öğrenci.) •Julia didn’t use to smoke when she was young. (Julia gençken sigara içmezdi.) Bayburt Üniversitesi Uzaktan Eğitim Merkezi 6 Modals (2) Özet • Bu ünitede görülen kipler (modals) should / had better / must / have to / would / used to kipleridir. Örnek: have to I have to be at work at 08:00 a.m. She has to be at work at 08:00 a.m. Do you have to be at work at 08:00 a.m. Does she have to be at work at 08:00 a.a. I don't have to be at work at 08:00 a.m. She doesn't have to be at work at 08:00 a.m. • Geçmiş alışkanlıkalrdan bahsederken kullanılan used to modalı, olumlu cümlelerde olduğu gibi kullanılırken, olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde 'did' yardımcı fiiliyle birlikte kullanıldığındna dolayı sonundaki '-d' eki yer almaz ve use to şeklinde kullanılır. Örnek: I used to smoke heavily. I didn't use to smoke heavily. Did you use to smoke heavily.
