Does it reveal or conceal? Oganer’in heykellerinde transparan olgusu ön plana çıkmaktadır. Transparency is the prominent element in the statues of Oganer. This ‘transparency’, which the exhibition is named after, entirely originates from the visual sensation caused by the material used in the works. Oganer has made his choice in materials as ‘dantel’ (lace) and ‘iğne oyaları’ (embroidery), both of which have an important place in Turkish hand crafts. In this context, the artist’s works have a relationship with the traditional. Aside from the choice of materials aspect, which is nourished from tradition, the artist’s works gain a contemporary status in terms of the form and conceptual aspects. ‘Transparan’ kelimesi dilimizde cinsel çağrışım yaparken, Fransızca kökenli kelimenin anlamı saydam, şeffaftır. Transparanın, kültürel algısının zihinde yarattığı durum, Oganer’in heykellerinin kompozisyonunda görselleşmiştir. Oganer’ in heykellerinde transparan olgusu ön plana çıkmaktadır. The mind’s cultural understanding of the word transparent gets visual at the compositions of Oganer’s statues. The chosen postures of the young female figures are captivating, suggestive and flirtatious. The lace used in the making of the statues wraps the body and reinforces a sexual emphasis. On the other hand, each of these laceworks that have been made by women, are considered to be part of a bride’s belongings in the traditional perspective. In Turkish society, the family of the daughter prepares a lot of her bridal belongings starting from her birth and the belongings are kept for years inside a chest. Each piece of lacework found in the bridal belongings are hand crafted with care. Every single one of it has a memory, with traces of the past and efforts of the maker… Bridal belongings and lace tell the story of a daughter’s past, but are prepared for the daughter’s future. In this context, the laceworks are timeless and they have a memory that is constantly updated. The way lacework carries on it traces of the past and yet continues to exist in the future means that Oganer’s works bear this subliminal meaning on them, that they have a certain memory of their own. On the other hand, the cultural elements of bridal belongings and lace are meant to prepare a girl for marriage. The bridal belonging concept symbolize the conception of richness in a society and all other features that a bride-to-be must have. The traditional attitude of lace and its sociocultural codes create an irony with the sexual appeal found in the young female statues of Oganer. In fact, considering the young female profile in Turkey today, the expression captured in Ozan Oganer’s statues is a reflection of the internal problem of the women who carry on their shoulders the weight of traditions –of yesterday- while trying to belong to the present day. Kadın imgesi, erkek sanatçı bakış açısı ve malzemenin yarattığı doku, Oganer’in kendine has duruşunu göstermektedir. Oganer’in heykellerinde kadın bedeni, izlenen durumundadır. Kadın, izlenmeyi arzu etmiştir, duruşu bunu vurgular. Sanatçı, izleyeni karşı cins olarak konumlandırmıştır. Figürlerin her birinde vücut hatları ön plandadır. Ozan Oganer’ in işleri, klasik anlamdaki ‘heykel’ çizgisini içinde barındırır. Akademik tekniği elden bırakmayışı, el işçiliği, titizliği ve anatomiye sadık kalışıyla Oganer, nitelikli işler çıkartmaktadır. Ozan Oganer’i farklı kılan yanı malzeme tercihidir. Oganer’ in heykelleri mekanla bütünleşmektedir. The ironic attitude in the works also continues with the transparency caused by the material used. Because, lace is a concealing element and yet still, a revealing one. Transparency serves to vaguely display what is in the background with its see-through nature while creating a certain form of camouflage. In fact, the actual subject is concealed while the background is displayed. This way, the artist has managed to conceal the female bodies with lace but also to make the inner worlds of them visible and see-through. The desire to be able to view a woman’s inner world and conceal her body is a masculine attitude. The female figure, the male artist’s perspective and the visual texture created by the material used; display the unique stance of Oganer. The fact that lace, which is such a feminine object and a production material, turns into statues under the hands of a male artist, serves to reinforce the ironic expression in the artworks. The ethnographic meanings communicated by each of the motifs on the lacework appear also as elements that the statues carry on them. Each of the motifs have been carefully woven on to the female bodies. Lace conforms with the anatomical shapes and even serves to make all corners rounder. Whereas the body materializes as an abode of sexuality, the soul is set to be free with the transparent nature of lace. In Oganer’s works the female body is an object of observation. The woman herself desires to be observed. That is what her posture conveys. The artist has envisioned the observer to be male. In each of the figures, parts of the body have been emphasized. These women are not reluctant about presenting their breasts or thighs to the observer. The works of Ozan Oganer have internalized the concept of ‘statue’ in its most classical meaning. Oganer puts qualified works in many ways including his manual craft, adherence to academic techniques, meticulousness and his loyalty to anatomy. What makes Ozan Oganer different is his choice of materials. His method of applying the lace creates a second dimension upon the surface of forms. This difference in details can clearly be seen as one comes into contact with his works. The statues of Oganer merge with the surrounding environment. The works first join a dreamscape and then interact with the actual place that they are in. “Çiğdem” has assumed a posture in which she leans on the wall with her hand and the lace texture continues onto the surface that she touches with her hand. At this point, the artist makes visual the space covered by the object he has created. This almost indiscernible area takes a more solid shape in the observer’s perception and the lace motifs continue forever in the mind. The same goes for “Meryem” In order to keep his statues alive and interacting with the observer as well as the environment; Oganer occasionally used complementary objects. The object is sometimes an architectural element and sometimes a daily object or even an animal. “Bahar” is the best example for the latter. The artwork, which materializes a scene from the daily life, displays a figure that almost feels like she will come to life and take her next step. From the lines on the face of the young girl, who is taking her dog out for a walk, to the anatomic features of her dog, all the details have been shown fully despite the difficulties caused by the material. “Fear of Height” views the observer from above whereas the pillar that she is sitting on alters the perception of space in the environment. Işığın kullanılış biçimi, eserin algısını her seferinde değiştirmektedir. Özlem Ünsal Aside from the large statues, Oganer proves his meticulousness in his smaller scale bust works as well. The model of choice for the bust works is also females. However, the interesting point about the busts is the way the motifs found on the lace do not spoil the portrait feature. The expressions on the faces remain clearly discernible. The expressions, shape of the lips and the look at the eyes of “B1and “B2” can be observed fully. The reason why Oganer is successful in conveying the expression is how he chooses to use for creating his works lace materials with motifs of various sizes and shapes –such as flowers or geometrical patterns- instead of single-motif textures and how he shapes this material in accordance dimensions and structure of the form he wishes to achieve. Another aspect of Oganer’s works is the rhythm they capture along with light and colors; a sense of belonging and an existence within a different dimension. The transparent and camouflaging nature of lace takes on a whole new meaning as it meets light. Even though the works of the artist seem “to be able to exist” on their own to the casual observer, the thing that makes these transparent works of Oganer belong to the surroundings and that carries them to another extent is the light that illuminates them. The way light is used is capable of changing the way an artwork is perceived each time. This situation makes the works alive and strengthens motion. Oganer also colors the works that he has made by using lace…. Color entirely changes the way light is perceived. As the color choice of the artist gets darker, the inner world of the figure, (which can be observed from the holes in the lace) is made prominent whereas in lighter colors both the body and soul are illuminated to become much more transparent. The harmony or contrast between light and color appears as an element in Oganer’s works that underlines the concept of emptiness/fullness. Ozan Oganer prefers to leave all of these circumstances to the observer’s perception… What’s important for him is how the observer is going to look at the “Transparent”: Does it conceal, or does it reveal ?...
