SOOS CREEK ELEMENTARY STAR SCOOP Patty Drobny Principal Volume 1 Issue 13 March 30, 2012 THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN Summer is still a few months away, yet parents are already asking how they can support their kids in reading during the break. Pam Allyn, author and executive director of Lit-World, suggests in this article 10 strategies to help struggling readers improve. Among her recommendations are to avoid judging the reader, introduce students to different reading materials, read together with students, and provide time to talk and give students reading tools, such as digital devices. Allyn also suggests allowing students to read at their level, discuss books deeply, encourage rereading, empower students to take control over what they read and get joy from reading. Educational Leadership (3/2012) More than anything, I recommend playing games with your kids, talking with them, letting them see you enjoy reading, and making time to visit libraries and book stores. HIV/AIDS Parent Preview Opportunities HIV/AIDS prevention education is part of the approved health curriculum for 5th and 6th grade students. Because these units cover sensitive topics, it is the Kent School District’s policy to provide parents with an opportunity to preview the HIV/AIDS curricula. The materials have been developed by the Health Education for Life Planning (HELP) committee and have been approved by the Kent School district Board of Directors. Parents wishing to excuse their student from this curriculum are required by Washington Administrative Code (WAC) to attend the parent preview option and sign on “Opt-out” form. The purpose of this preview night is to review the HIV/AIDS prevention program and to assure parents that our approach is one which is intended to strengthen families and be supportive of parental responsibility. The HIV/AIDS videos for grades 5 and 6 will be shown simultaneously in separate rooms. Curriculum materials used in the unit will also be on display.
