The specimen consisted of a section of door leaf with a glazed aperture, hung within a door frame. Details of the test specimen The numbers in brackets are reference to figures 1 & 2. The overall size of the leaf was 1040mm high x 927mm wide x 44mm thick. The leaf core comprised Halspan 44mm thick 630kg/m3 density particleboard (1), lipped on the vertical edges only with 6mm thick **640kg/m3 Sapele (2). The leaf was hung within a **510kg/m3 European redwood frame (3) on 2No Royde and Tucker Hi-Load 105 lift off type steel hinges (4). The frame comprised 32mm thick x 70mm deep European redwood, with a 12mm deep x 20mm wide European redwood planted (pinned) stop (5). A 15 x 4 type intumescent strip, detail held in confidence by Chiltern International Fire Ltd (6) measuring 15mm wide x 4mm thick, was fitted 15mm from the exposed face in the head and jambs of the frame. The intumescent seal was fully interrupted by the hinge blades in the frame jamb. No further intumescent protection was fitted. The leaf aperture measured 899mm high x 769mm wide and the sight size measured 815mm high x 685mm wide. The leaf was glazed with 6mm thick Georgian wired glass (7) with a 3mm expansion allowance to all edges. The glazing beads were **640kg/m3 Sapele (8) and measured 25mm high x 22mm deep including a 4mm x 4mm bolection return, and a 10° chamfer. 50mm long steel wood screws (9) were fitted 50mm from the corners at 150mm centres, fixing the bead to the leaf. The screws were fixed at 30° to the glass face and cradled the glass. 25mm wide x 3mm thick (uncompressed) Evo-stik Intustrip <lOP 24-1043" (10) was fitted between the glass and bead on both faces. No latch was fitted, although the door was wired shut at the equivalent handle position until the intumescent seals had reacted and positive furnace pressure achieved. * ** Stated density, not verified by the laboratory. The temperature and pressure were controlled to the conditions outlined in SS 476: Part 22: 1987. The pressure at the head of the specimen was maintained at 9.5 Pa to simulate a leaf height of 2.1m. The ambient temperature of the laboratory at the start of the test was 20°C The temperature of the specimen was measured by means of three thermocouples fixed to the leaf and two thermocouples fixed to the frame, and two thermocouples fixed to the glass. The temperatures were recorded and are shown graphically below: Doorset temperature curve 800 Maximum glass temperature 600 o ° . . Maximum door leaf temperature 400 Mean door leaf temperature 200 10 20 30 40 50 Time minutes Test for: Bostik Ltd Ref: ChiltllF09083 Page 3 of 5 Observations Time (minutes) Comments 01.16 The glass is starting to crack. 03.36 There is smoke issuing from around the door to frame perimeter gaps. 10.12 Material is starting to drop from behind the bead at the top corners of the glazing. 17.22 There is discolouration only. 28.29 There is a glow visible at the top hinge position. 28.50 Parts of the glazing beads on the exposed face are starting to fall away from the glazing. 37.51 There is a glow visible across the top of the glazing bead. 40.51 There is intermittent flaming at the top hanging corner of the leaf. 46.05 There is continuous flaming for more than 10 seconds at the top hinge position to the top hanging corner of the leaf. 46.40 There is continuous flaming for more than 10 seconds across the top glazing bead. 47.00 Test terminated. Test for: Bostik Ltd Ref: ChiltllF09083 and the smoke issue continues at the top hinge position Page 4 of 5 Primary Observations Time (minutes) Comments 46.05 There is continuous flaming for more than 10 seconds at the top hinge position to the top hanging corner of the leaf. 46.40 There is continuous flaming for more than 10 seconds across the top glazing bead. 47.00 Test terminated. Whilst this report relates to an investigation, which utilised the exposure conditions given in 88476: Part 20: 1987, the full requirements of the test standard were not complied with. The information is provided for the test sponsor's information and should not be used to demonstrate performance against the standard nor compliance with regulatory requirements. The test was not conducted under the requirement of UKA8 accreditation.
