It also led to many questions by our Turkish partner. (2) During the Q & A session, the questions were mostly thrown to the Turkish Standards Institution. Among those who raise some issues were from the municipal council, the slaughter house department etc (3) Due to late arrangements, the collateral items were sent by Emirates cargo and this has caused the time to be wasted because the custom clearance took one day and we had to go from one building to another. Continue: Opportunities – the constitution secular, almost everyone disagree if government of Turkey have halal standard like Malaysia. Almost all guests & speakers agree that is not the government job to do the halal certification because it is against the constitution and they are afraid it could not be impartial. If the government proceed with that, there will be a lot of domestic resistance because secular committee will disagree. The industry agrees that NGO or private sector should do the halal certification. The general meaning of halal is non-pork. Few years ago, there was a findings in carbonated drinks that it contain alcohol, out of 10 carbonated drinks which were tested contained alcohol. Further to that, when this issue was announce, the sales of carbonated drinks drop to 50%, in which means that the Turkish still concerns about halal. This industry dialogue coincide with the effort from Turkish Standard Enstitution (TSE) in which in May 2005 they have announced that TSE is starting a research to produce halal standards and predict that halal standard will be completed in November 2008. However, many parties including the Consumer Union disagree that TSE does the standard because the institution is govern by the government. Turkey needs certification process and standard to protect muslim in turkey. There is one private company who has express their interest to do halal certification according to syariah and quality, safety principle in which they will need assistance from KasehDia/World Halal Forum & the Malaysian government to ensure the process is right and follow the MS 1500/2004 as reference. However, standard Malaysia will be change according to Tukish situation. The problem that is faced currently is who or what is the right body Malaysia to seek for assistance. If KasehDIa/World Halal Forum & the Malaysian government are unable to support, there is high possibility they will seek assistance from IFANCA or World Halal Council and it will be a big lost for Malaysia. Raw materials – tomato paste is one of the biggest item that Malaysia buy from Turkey. Other than that is fruit juice. Malaysian consumers think that tomato paste from Turkey is the best. Export – palm oil & related products, consumer electric goods etc. - professional service i.e. expertise, consultant Halal - Malaysia import goods from Turkey but without the halal certification. This is due to the reason that Malaysia perceive Turkey as an Islamic country. However, according to the recent shocking findings such as there is rennet in cheese, and carbonated drinks contain alcohol, Malaysia should be more careful because not all Turkish products are halal. In order to secure safety & local consumer rights, Malaysia should support the halal certificate in line as Malaysian role to be the global halal hub. Not only this will help strengthen their halal industry using Malaysian expertise but also it could also strengthen Malaysian position as chairman of OIC. Another example of company is PINAR which is the biggest food producer in Turkey (meats, dairy, confectionary) has also expressed their interest to obtain the halal certification from Malaysia.
