4 Photography FROM EDITOR In the previous issue, we have made an introduction to photography and said that we will continue in the following issues. In this issue, we start with the article entitled as “Photographing People” with Abdullah Agâh Öncül, author of the books ‘Foto-Mak-Âlem’ and ‘An’ı Naftalinlemek’, as editor. Later on, we will mention a detail in photography with the article entitled as ‘Manipulation on Early Examples of War Photography’ of Alper Elitok, who has a Ph.D. in war photography. After that, Şenay Kaya will depict a technique which is almost never used in photography anymore with her articled entitled as ‘Retouch in Studio Photography: Charcoal’ with a nostalgic approach. Article that Photographer Abdullah Agâh Öncül, Chemical Engineer Dr. A. Alper Öncül and Educator A. Emrah Öncül wrote together, entitled ‘3D MATRIX: Matrix Philosophy in 3 Values’, brings a different perspective to photography. Finally we include the interview with photographer İbrahim Peynirci by Haluk Bütüner and we take a break there. We take a break, because photography is such a wide area that it may be subject of many issues. İlkay ATAV www.tasartdergi.com Abdullah Agâh Öncül: İnsanları Fotoğraflamak / Photographing People İNSANLARI FOTOĞRAFLAMAK Abdullah Agâh Öncül PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE Bazen aklımızdakini anlatmak kolaydır; bazen de çok zordur. Aile bireylerini fotoğraflamak tanıdıklık açısından kolaydır ama ilginç bir an ya da farklı bir poz alma, belki 6 Sometimes, it is easy to tell what is in our minds and sometimes it is difficult. What is easy is what we notice; however, what is difficult is the one we are not familiar with or the one which is very familiar to us. We do not have difficulty in photographing the people in our immediate environment; because we know them, they are familiar to us. However, the fact that they are familiar to us makes it difficult photograph them when and how. We cannot observe our immediate environment very well. Not sıradanlığı aşmayı sağlayabilir. Modelin sadece fiziği değil, o anki ellerinin, ayaklarının, omuzlarının ve tüm vücudunun duruşu, gözlerinin bakışı hatta baktığı yön bile fotoğrafta o zor olanı anlatmaya yarayan ufacık bir kıvılcımdır. being able to search for details makes the observation superficial. Photographing family members is easy in terms of familiarity, but capturing an interesting moment or a different exposure may help overcoming ordinariness. Photographing someone from external environment, taking pictures for free is harder but subject and detail is easy. Our need to photograph a stranger starts with the fact that this strangers attracts our attention in an extraordinary manner. We observe the model and www.tasartdergi.com Abdullah Agâh Öncül İnsanları Fotoğraflamak / Photographing People Bu süreç bazen çok kolay ve kısa olur; bazen tam tersi olur. Not only the physical appearance of the model, but also the posture of hands, feet, shoulders and whole body of the model, the look and even the direction he/she is looking at the moment is the sparkle which helps to express what is difficult in the photograph. This process is sometimes very easy and short or vice versa. You can fit some people in a frame by identifying that person’s personality with the place without saying even one word. You take the photograph first and walk away without saying one word, without seeing that person ever again. Sometimes you encounter such a person that you get to know, talk to him/her and you don’t care about the photograph. An interesting conversation starts and then you start taking photographs. Depicting the life, personality and place of the person in the photograph with minimum defects makes the photograph documentary. Setting rules about how to photograph people does not mean anything but creating a vicious cycle in veya toplulukları fotoğraflarken biraz daha sabırlı ve saygılı davranmak muhakkak iki taraf için de en iyisi olacaktır. However, we should not photograph a person when he/she does not want to be photographed. People may give different reactions in different moments according to their psychological state, cultural and religious values. This is natural. While photographing people or communities that we do not know how they may react in such conditions, being a little more patient and respectful sure will be the best for both sides. While taking photographs taken with patience creates appropriate frames, it also will be the first step of the following photographs. However, this is sometimes inevitable since the free spirit of the photographer prefers catching the moment rather than waiting. Photographing people is such an indescribable and unpredictable thing. You cannot know the reactions of people or where they will encounter them. Trying to talk, getting permission may prevent what might happen to you, but if it is a moment that cannot be missed and you do not have the time to get permission, I wish you luck in advance… www.tasartdergi.com Savaş Fotoğra İçindekiler / Contents >> İNSANLIK VAR OLDUĞUNDAN BERİ ÇATIŞMALAR MAĞARA DUVARLARINA ÇİZDİĞİ RESİMLERİNDEN İFADE ETMEK İSTEYEN İNSANLAR HAYATLARINDA DA YÜZEY ÜZERİNE AKTARMAK İSTEMİŞTİR CONFLICTS AND WARS HAVE BEEN CONTINUING SINCE THE PICTURES ON CAVE WALLS, MANKI FEELINGS AND OPINIONS, ALSO WANTED TO D IMPORTANT PART IN THEIR LIVES, ON A SURFACE 10 Alper Elitok aflarının İlk Örneklerinde Manipulasyon VE SAVAŞLAR DEVAM ETMEKTEDİR. Andre Bazin, fotoğrafın, resme göre yeniliğinin temel nesnelliğinde (objektivite) olduğunu, bu yüzden de insan gözünün yerini alan fotoğraf makinesinin gözünü meydana 12 Before the invention of photography, this was expressed subjectively in art forms such as engraving, arts, etc. Until antiwar paintings and engravings of Spanish artists Goya in 1810-1815, pictures about war elevated government, demonstrated and documented the government as the symbol of victory and heroism. In his paintings, Goya displayed the terrifying and brutal face rly Examples of War Photography getiren mercekler topluluğuna da objektif denildiğini belirtir. Ancak, fotoğraf gerçeğe olan sadakati nedeniyle inandırıcı olma özelliği göstermesine karşın her zaman gerçekleri göstermemiştir. Fotoğrafın ilk yıllarından itibaren fotoğrafçılar objektifin önündeki nesnel gerçekliği çarpıtacak düzenlemeler yapmışlardır. Savaş fotoğraflarının ilk örnekleri de hem o yıllardaki fotoğraf teknolojisi of the war and became the symbol of demolishing traditional patterns. With the invention of photography, the habits of mankind in terms of seeing have changed and seeing became an action which raise awareness rather than being only a biologic fact. Now the events are presented from a mechanical reality perspective more objectively due to the nature of photography; not as the artist pictures the events on their minds or as the witnesses tell. Andre Bazin stated that the innovation of photography compared to drawing was objectivity and for that reason, set of optics which constitutes the eye of the camera that takes place of the human eye is called objective. Although photography is believable due to its loyalty to reality, it did not always demonstrate the truth. Since the early years of photography, photographers have made manipulations on the photograph which would twist the facts in front of the objective. First examples of war photographs sometimes were away from objective reality due to the photograph technology in those years and the manipulations by the www.tasartdergi.com Alper ELİTOK : Savaş Fotoğraflarının İlk örneklerinde ‘Manipulasyon’ / ‘Manipulation on Ear hem de fotoğrafçıların manipulasyonu yüzünden nesnel gerçeklikten yer yer uzaklaşmıştır. Six years after the invention of photography, first images related to war were recorded during MexicanAmerican war in 1845. These daguerreotypes, around 50, are among the first examples of war photography although some of them are quite worn off. It may be more appropriate to call these photographs “first photographs shot during a war” instead of “war photographs”, because these photographs are far away from reflecting the real face of war. Since the technique used was daguerreotype, photographs obtained with long exposures consisted of uniformed soldiers’ souvenir photographs and empty city sceneries due to long exposure. When the photographers wanted to document truths then, they encountered both philosophical and technical problems. Both daguerreotype and collotype required long exposure times during shot and in addition to this, a long preparation process was required for materials to be used before shot and a difficult laboratory work was required after shot. This made taking rly Examples of War Photography sonra zahmetli bir laboratuar aşaması gerektiriyordu. Tarihçi Gina Rodriguez Hernandez grubun fotoğraf için ayarlandığını çünkü fotoğraftakilerin bir savaş anı ameliyatı için çok temiz görünmekte olduğunu söylemiştir. photographs impossible in the fast pace of the war. In addition to this, it is not possible to say that even first war photographs are not manipulated. ‘Amputation* scene’ is an interesting Mexican daguerreotype which is possible restaged for camera. It probably depicts a surgical intervention on a sergeant by the general inspector of Mexican Medical Army Corps, Dr. Pedro Van Der Linden. Van Der Linden (right) is holding a leg amputated just under the knee. Other people turned towards the remaining part of the amputated limb of the patient. A mark is added to the photography indicating the date and place. It seems suspicious that the image was taken right after the operation. Another possibility, which is higher, is that the photograph was takes being restaged later. Historian Gina Rodriguez Hernandez said that the group was assembled for the photograph, because the people in the photograph were too clean for a surgery during war (Marien, 2006, 48). www.tasartdergi.com Alper ELİTOK : Savaş Fotoğraflarının İlk örneklerinde ‘Manipulasyon’ / ‘Manipulation on Ear (Marien, 2006, 48) İlk Dünya Savaşının provası olarak görülen Kırım Savaşı Savaşı’nın fotoğraf tarihi açısından önemi düzenli olarak fotoğraflanan ilk savaş olmasıdır. The importance of Crimean War, which is seen as the rehearsal of World War I, in terms of photography history is that it is the first war which is photographed regularly. A great deal of photographers were commissioned by their governments to document the war and sent to the front. The most known of these is English Roger Fenton. Wet collodion technique was invented in those years. Taking photographs with wet plate replaced daguerreotype within a short time. Although this technique has a lot of advantages, it has an important problem; glass plates should be sensitized just before exposure and bathed right after the shot. This means that the photographer had to take his dark room with his. For that reason, Fenton had to wander around the battle field with a large carriage which he used as both dark room and bedroom. rly Examples of War Photography odası olarak kullandığı büyük bir at arabası ile gezmek zorundaydı. Üç ile yirmi saniye arasında değişen pozlama süresi yüzünden savaşın o hareketli anları, koşan, ateş askerlerin, atlarıyla hücum eden süvariler görüntülenemiyordu. Fenton zaten Prens Albert’in teşvikiyle Britanya hükümetince Kırım’a gönderilmiş olan, dolayısıyla savaşın ‘resmi’ fotoğrafçısı olmaktan öte bir sıfat taşımayan biriydi. Britanya hükümeti, tanınmış bir profesyonel fotoğrafçıyı cepheye davet etme ihtiyacı duymuştu, çünkü Kırım’a bir önceki yıl gönderilmiş Britanya askerlerinin başına gelen beklenmedik riskler ve yoksunlukların, basında dehşet verici boyutlarda yer alması üzerine duruma müdahale etmek gerektiğini anlamış ve savaştan hoşnutsuzluğun artmasına karşı daha olumlu bir izlenim uyandırmayı amaçlamıştı. Londra’ya giden fotoğraflar savaş hakkında çok yanlış bir fikir Because of the long exposure time varying between 3 and 20 seconds, action moments, running and shooting soldiers and riders could not be captured. Fenton was a man who was sent to Crimea by the British Government with the incentive of Prince Albert and therefore he was nothing more than the ‘official’ photographer of the war. British government was in need of inviting a well-known professional photographer to the front, because the government understood that they should intervene the situation when unexpected risks and deficiencies that the soldiers sent to the front previous year encountered were covered by the press to a terrifying extend and they aimed to create a more positive impression against the increasing restlessness due to the war. The photographs arrived at London create a false impression about the war, because these pictures show soldiers as lined up behind the battle www.tasartdergi.com Alper ELİTOK : Savaş Fotoğraflarının İlk örneklerinde ‘Manipulasyon’ / ‘Manipulation on Ear vermektedir. As Susan Sontag states, “war photography started with a disgraceful history.” Only one of the photographs of Fenton, ‘Valley of the Shadow of Death’ creates strong emotions about the horridness of war. In the photograph he took on a passage called ‘Valley of Death’, there was no human figure who is in pain, instead it is seen that cannonballs and shrapnel covered a pit like a river. Actually, this photograph was manipulated; Fenton took two shots there. In the first one, cannonballs were piled up on the road side and a few were scattered along the road, but in the second shot, Fenton and his assistants scattered the cannonballs along the road in order to create the image that the action happened recently and obtain a more impressive photograph. rly Examples of War Photography gülleleri yola dağıtmışlardır. (Amar, 2000 : 29) However, American Civil War is completely different in terms of photography. While Fenton’s shots were prescribed and censored, the team led by M. Brady took note of objectivity and perfection in their photographs. The shots of this team is important for they showed the horridness of the war concretely for the first time. Burnt or demolished buildings, the dead and the injured were seen in the war photographs for the first time in history. One of the most famous and symbolic shots of this war is the shot taken by A. Gardner in Gettysburg in 1863, ‘The home of a Rebel Sharpshooter’. There is a historic polemic to prove that this shot was staged: The stiffness of the body was not as expected and it was obtained by the assistant of the photographer by manipulating at least two photographs (Amar, 2000: 29). www.tasartdergi.com Alper ELİTOK : Savaş Fotoğraflarının İlk örneklerinde ‘Manipulasyon’ / ‘Manipulation on Ear Fotoğraftaki silah incelendiğinde ise bunun keskin nişancıların kullandığı türden bir tüfek değil de sıradan bir piyade erine verilecek cinste bir tüfek olduğu anlaşılmaktadır.(Sontag,2003:54) When the gun in the shot was examined, it was understood that this was not the type of rifle used by snipers, but one used by infantry (Sontag, 2003: 54). Basın yasağına rağmen özel fotoğraf makineleri taşıyan kimi isimsiz When the World War I broke out, photograph technology was advanced, cameras could be carried by hand and the exposure time of the films used were shorter. However, military authorities considered a free press as a security risk and exposed war photography directly to military censorship. Despite the press ban, shots taken by some unnamed officers and soldiers who had private cameras 20 rly Examples of War Photography subay ve askerlerin bazı fotoğrafları günümüze dek ulaşmıştır. Hurley, savaş sırasında çektiği üç fotoğrafı birleştirerek yukarıdaki görüntüyü elde etmiştir. Havadaki uçaklar, solda reached us. Hurley combined there photographs he shot during war and obtained above image. Flying planes, soldiers who left their trench on the left and soldiers waiting in their trench on the siperlerini terk etmiş askerler ve sağda siperlerinde bekleyen askerler. Hurley, ‘Çarpıcı ve sansasyonel savaş fotoğrafları çekmek imkânsızı right. Manipulated photographs like this and similar to this put the photographer against the official historian of Anzac forces, Charles Bean. Bean strictly objected to photographs which do not reflect the truth. However, according to Hurley, there was no other way to depict the reality of the war. Hurley said; ‘To get war pictures of striking interest and sensation is like attempting the impossible’. When the fictional www.tasartdergi.com Alper ELİTOK : Savaş Fotoğraflarının İlk örneklerinde ‘Manipulasyon’ / ‘Manipulation on Ear yapmaya çalışmaktır’ demiştir. 22 photographs of Hurley were exhibited in London in 1918 for the first time, they were exhibited under the category of ‘composite’. In the following years, this reminder was somehow lost and people started to think that those were brilliantly shot action photographs (http://www.greatwar.nl/frames/defaultweekpictures.html). Similarly, 2 shots taken by Private F. A. Fyfe commissioned in Liverpool Regiment with his camera he had, although it was forbidden, were combined as panoramic photographs and dramatized. In the later stages of war photography, such interventions and manipulations were made and they continued until digital technology era. Photographers who intervene in photographs said that they make these interventions sometimes to increase the dramatic impact of the war and sometimes to make the photograph more impressive in terms of visual quality. If we consider it in this context, the relationship between the authenticity and accuracy of the war photographs have been pushed continuously. rly Examples of War Photography F.A Fye, Bellewaarde / Hooge 1915 (Fotomontaj) Kaynakça Amar , P-J. Photography in a studio is a work in which the photographer controls the light and which requires high amount of creativity. The motto, “Photograph is first taken in the mind” is among the indispensable rules of studio works. The next stage of photography after bath is retouching. Materials used for retouching are pipitri, matolen and pencils. Pipitri is also known as light bag in 40x50 size, there is a round white dull glass in the middle of a cover which forms 45 degree angle. It is placed on a table or bench. Matolen is a mixture of turpentine and natural resin. A drop is applied to the emission side of the film by means of a brush and it is wiped by spreading on the film surface with cotton. This ensures that the film is retouched easily and the retouch is permanent. www.tasartdergi.com Şenay Kaya: Stüdyo Fotoğrafçılığında Rötuş: Kara Kalemi / Retouch in Studio Photography: 26 Charcoal www.tasartdergi.com Şenay Kaya: Stüdyo Fotoğrafçılığında Rötuş: Kara Kalemi / Retouch in Studio Photography: Siyah beyaz veya renkli 6x7 yada 4,5x6 ebatlarında roll film üzerine matolen sürüldükten sonra sıra rötuş işlemine gelmektedir. Generally 2B, HB or 2H pencils are used. The hardness of the pencil to be used varies from person to person. The pencil is sharpened like a needle by means of waterproof sandpaper. Retouch requires patience, accuracy and fine work. The image on the film is a negative image, just opposite of the positive image on the card. Parts to be retouched are light coloured. Under the eye, curves around the lips, wrinkles and spots, etc. Without removing completely, they are accorded to the rest of the face with small touches. Eğer insan ruhu gerçeklik ise Matris diye adlandırdığımız yanılsama boyutu da to communicate with each other and the basis is provided to the emotion to occur. After all, the function of emotions is to tell stories about the outer world. The walls of the matrix are shaped by the quite sensitive electro-chemical signals which are created among nerve cells. Aren’t depression, schizophrenia etc. conditions that occur when such sensitive balances are disturbed? Or, the fact that we are stressed during a nightmare even though we do not actually experience that emotion, what can it be other than a delusion? It is even possible that our emotions take us to happiness away from the worries of all realities or push us towards delusions in search. For this, it is enough that chemical interactions are subjected to only external intervention; just like when Morpheus let Neo choose red or blue pills. Consequently, the signals created by chemical interactions sometimes may cause the delusion of reality. On the other hand, the fact that someone who died in the Matrix also dies spiritually describes how strong the connection between the reality and delusion might be. 3. Değer : Psikoloji - Felsefe A. I attach importance to standing behind photographs. I recommend that they rigorously examine the background and photographs of the masters of Turkish photography. h photographer Ibrahim Peynirci www.tasartdergi.com BU SAYFAYA REKLAM ALINIR. tasartdergi@gmail.com cAFE BAR Parolayı Söyle !
