ANMED ANADOLU AKDENİZİ Arkeoloji Haberleri 2012-10 News of Archaeology from ANATOLIA’S MEDITERRANEAN AREAS (Ayrıbasım/Offprint) Suna - İnan Kıraç Akdeniz Medeniyetleri Araştırma Enstitüsü Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations Aspendos Yüzey Araştırmaları 2011 Surveys in Aspendos in 2011 Veli KÖSE Aspendos Projesi’nin Aspendos antik kentindeki dördüncü sezon araştırmaları yine her yıl olduğu gibi T.C. The fourth campaign of surveys in Aspendos within the frame of the Aspendos Project was carried out 4-23 September 2011 with a permit issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums by a large interdisciplinary team of Turkish and international experts*. An exedra structure located near the agora and by the road leading to the south gate of the agora was measured using total station (Fig. 1). The drawings of the structure will be rendered using AutoCad in the office during the winter phase of our work. As inferred to date, the structure had two storeys and the upper floor comprised niches. It was built partially with stones and bricks. It should have been plastered over as seen from extensive traces on the lower floor. An arch springing from the south wing of the structure extended parallel to the road. And this suggests that the exedra observed today was indeed part of a larger structure. It could be a fountain, but the absence of water channels or basins suggests that it may have served as a performance hall. * Bu çalışmada Dr. L. In one of the rooms, which may have been divided at a later date, there was an inscription on the lintel over the doorway that read “Nemesis” and it was documented. For the time being we think that the name Nemesis may refer to the goddess or may be related with the owner or function of the room. Fig. 1 Exedra structure The room walls were built with regular and irregular stones and plaster; they were built at a later date and different from the original basilica. In addition, the arch before the area where these rooms are found was closed off during the construction of these rooms. One of the rooms was hewn round in bedrock. The room may have been used for cult purposes or as a workshop, but its function will only be clarified after further investigation in the future. Baths of Late Antiquity (Residential Building?) koymaktadır. Yapı çok odalıdır ve odalardan birbirlerine kemerlerle There is a well-preserved structure to the north of the temple. It was marked on the topographic and existing map. This year we had a further opportunity to examine this structure, which may be tentatively dated to late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. It is multi-roomed, and the rooms communicate with each other usually with arched doorways. The walls of the rooms and the arches were built with stones and bricks. In some parts water pipes are embedded in the walls. The south wall of the largest room in the south was extended higher to a second floor, and this can be observed on the wall. This was either a bath in late antiquity or a residential building owned by a wealthy person or dignitary. However, even if it were a residential building, it was one installed with heating and/or water system. Its photogrammetric drawings will be rendered in the future. This building will be incorporated into the plaster analysis project foreseen for the structures such as the theatre and the fountain, so samples of plaster will be taken. Thus, it will be possible to analyse and compare plaster samples from different points in the city’s history. Comparison with those from buildings with a known date will show any changes and organic content in the composition of the plaster over time. Cultural Heritage and Field Management Work In the 2011 campaign we worked on the topographic and final layout plan of the archaeological and natural protection site in order to organize routes for visitors to tour the site better. For this purpose, various routes were 126 YÜZEY ARAŞTIRMA RAPORLARI SURVEY REPORTS Plan 2 Yürüme rotalarının Magellan GPS ile alınmış noktaları ile birlikte Aspendos topoğrafyası üzerindeki planı Plan 2 Magellan GPS points of the routes and their location in the topography of Aspendos Plan 1 Yürüme rotaları Plan 1 Walking routes geçilmektedir. Res. 2 İskele mevkii Fig. 2 İskele mevkii prepared and visited by teams of two who calculated the tour time and took photographs, just like tourists do. Existing routes based on present vegetation and extant structures were taken into consideration. The route of each path and its duration were noted. For the time being, six routes have been established. The visitors may take each path individually or unite a few of them. In case we are granted a permit for excavations in the future, we will improve these routes. Here are the routes (Plan 1-2). Route 1: Being the longest of the six routes, it starts in the area of the river harbour, passes by the harbour baths and small baths before reaching the south gate. From there it continues northwest to the agora located at a higher elevation. On the way to the agora, the exedra structure is seen. After visiting the Hellenistic market building, basilicas, fountain, and two-storey market/ shops (?) around the agora, the visitor continues northward. Then the bouleuterion/odeion is visited, and following the street one passes by the monumental east 127 YÜZEY ARAŞTIRMA RAPORLARI SURVEY REPORTS Plan 3 Teritoryumda gezilen alanların Magellan GPS ile alınmış noktaları ile birlikte harita üzerindeki durumu Plan 3 Magellan GPS points of the areas visited in the territory and their location on the map Rota 1: En uzun rotadır. Bunun nedeni yürüme güzergahı olmaması ve çalılıklar yüzünden yapılara ancak bu gate, takes the modern path used by tourists today to climb up to the agora and reaches the theatre. After visiting the theatre, the remains to the south are visited. A touristic visit on this route takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. Route 2: It starts with the path in the northwest corner of the flat area in front of the bouleuterion/odeion of Route 1, covers the northwest quarter of the city, passes by a large complex and reaches the north gate. Then it visits part of the fortifications in the north, follows part of the ancient street and turns south. It follows the late antique/ medieval baths or residential building with baths, reaches the temple and then Route 1. It takes 1 hour 53 minutes; this is partly due to absence of a walking path and the difficulty of terrain. When new paths are created the route will take much shorter. Route 3: It starts from the path leading to the stadium of Route 1 and goes around it. It takes 16 minutes to reach the sphendone. Thus a round-trip will take 30-35 minutes. Route 4: On Plan 1 this route appears to zigzag due to a lack of walking paths and the presence of bushes. When a new path is created, the route will be shorter. The route starts from north of the two-storey shops (?) and visits the southwest quarter of the city where most of the visible remains date to late Antiquity. It takes 1 hour 24 minutes to reach the last building. Route 5: It starts on the asphalt road passing by the small baths and reaches a complex to the southwest, which was first used as a monumental tomb and then for other purposes. It takes 25 minutes. Route 6: The route starts from the north gate and visits the aqueducts and siphon system in Camili köy and a structure of late Antiquity/Middle Ages. It takes 38 minutes. Surveys for the Sea Harbour (?) of Aspendos Archaeological and geophysical surveys in 2009 led to the discovery of the river harbour’s location. However, investigation for the location of a harbour on the seaside had not started. Two areas where the sea harbour may have been located were explored within the surveys in the territory of Aspendos (Plan 4). One of these two areas is the flat area east of where the Köprüçay flows into the sea (Fig. 2). This area known as İskele Mevkii was explored, and potsherds and some worked blocks were noted (Fig. 3). However, the most significant point here was that illicit digs were noted. In addition to potsherds, glass and bronze fragments were also observed in the illicitly dug pits. Bronze fragments include broken nails as well as a bronze pin or needle. Some pits contain stone and plastered walls. Extant remains in this area point to the Roman period and late Antiquity, but there may be remains of earlier periods. It may even be the case that we are encountering the remains of a settlement of the Roman period and late Antiquity, which may have developed around the sea harbour. We hope that geophysical surveys to be conducted in this flat area and the coastline will yield sharper results. The other possible location of the sea harbour lies to the west of Büklüce where the Köprüçay makes sharp curves. During the exploration in this area called Ada locate, it was seen to be necessary to explore the other 129 YÜZEY ARAŞTIRMA RAPORLARI Deniz limanı olarak düşünülen bir başka alan Bük lüce’nin batısına rastlayan bir alanda ve Köprüçay’ın kesin kavisli dönüşler gösterdiği bir kesimdir. SURVEY REPORTS side of the river. However, time was running short so it was postponed to the next campaign. Exploration on the east bank has not brought any remains to our attention. Büklüce Some decorated ancient blocks were noted embedded in the house walls of Süleyman Çınar at no. 52/B in Büklüce. These include an Attic-Ionic column base and two Corinthian capitals, one of the Roman period and the other later, possibly of late Antiquity (Fig. 4). Another area we explored was the two hills by the road coming from Büklüce. The modern road cut the edges of the hill into two. As these hills could be höyüks, we decided to explore them. The small number of potsherds noted on these hills are not sufficient to claim the presence of early settlements. Indeed some potsherds are of modern times. Çakış We climbed up another hill called Kale Tepe south of Gebekaya, which had been explored in the previous campaign. It is northeast of Çakış village on the east bank of the Köprüçay (Plan 3). On the very top are a few wall remains, which may have belonged to a former watchtower. Only a few potsherds were noted on the way uphill. 130
