With its 11 Faculties, 11 Vocational Schools, 1 Conservatory and 4 Schools, a Research Hospital with 1.200 beds, 18.600 students and a staff of 4.000 primarily in Diyarbakir, Batman, Mardin, Siirt and Sirnak it is the most dynamic power that can be an incentive role in the development not only of Diyarbakır but also of the whole region. Nearly 1.400 of this 4.000 personnel are academic personnel and Dicle University’s direct or indirect contribution to the employment reaches a total of 5.000 people, considering that at least 1.000 families each employs a woman for house cleaning, child care and etc. According to the industrial inventory of 2000, the importance of contribution of Dicle University to Diyarbakir is clearly seen in terms of employment which is provided by the 173 private sector investments is for 6.000 people. The importance of the contribution of the University for Diyarbakir is certainly not limited with the employment. At present, roughly 70% percent of the students studying at Dicle University comes primarily from Diyarbakir and different cities and towns of East and South East Anatolian region. Regarding the last five years, the number of students registered only in Diyarbakir has been nearly 8.000. If the University had not provided this opportunity, families in Diyarbakir would have faced with the financial and spiritual difficulties in educating their children in distant cities as well as present shortages of their incomes. Some of the graduates have established their own business. In other words, as it was 15-20 years ago, if there is no deficiency in professions such as teaching, medicine, law, engineering, dentistry, etc. in Diyarbakir or if this deficiency has been brought to the least it should not be forgotten that Dicle University has a great role in that. One of the services that Dicle University offers primarily to Diyarbakir and to the region is The Vocational School carries out its education in a part of the building of Engineering-Architecture Faculty. Dicle University Research Hospital, especially with the improvements that have been made has reached the level of health institutions in bigger cities in respect to its physical conditions, variety of its services and quality. One of the most important duties of the university, along with basic sciences, is to carry out research projects in order to bring solution to the regional problems. At Dicle University especially in the fields like stockbreeding, public health, sociology, environmental problems, projects are carried on to find solutions to possible problems with the introduction of GAP (Southeast Anatolian Project) and to get productivity from GAP at best. The research of committing suicide incidents, certified seed production, production of coloured cotton, development of hybrid sheep that breed Electronics Laboratory of the School twice a year, the adaptation of American vine trees to the region, the research of the reoccur- Some Examples of Research Projects rence of an abscess, unique to the Southeastern Performed by Faculty of Agriculture region of Turkey, are just a few examples among these projects. However, these are not enough to make people happy. Besides meeting necessary human needs, the level of meeting recreational needs such as culture, art, sports, amusements, relaxation is a sign of quality life, in other words, a sign of development of the province and society. As the great leader Atatürk said, “A nation without art means that it has lost one of its arteries.” Dicle University also feels a great gap in that field and with both its facilities and its present people potential adds great liveliness to the social, cultural and sports life of Diyarbakır. The absolute foundation date of Diyarbakir described by historians and scientists as “The World-City” is still unknown. The name Diyarbakir, famed as the centre of science and culture of Mesopotamia during the history, was written firstly on the handle of a sword inherited from the King of Assyria, Adad-Ninari (1281 B.C.) as “Amidi ”. Department of Agricultural Engineering The department consists of the following branches: Vegetable Production Programme 1.Garden Plants 2.Field Plants 3.Plant Protection 4.Agricultural Structures and Irrigation 5.Agricultural Equipment 6.Soil The location of noted mythological cave Eshab-ul Keyf, and Dacianus ruins are in the town of Lice. The holy Mount Zulkufil, the Cayonu Archaeological Site and Hilar Caves are in the town of Ergani. Within the environs of Diyarbakir are the Birkleyn and Hasun Caves and the Antak City ruins. Situated on the banks of Tigris (Dicle) river in South-Eastern Anatolia, Diyarbakir still carries a medieval air with its walls encircling the city. These black basalt walls are perfect examples of the military architecture of the Middle Ages. They are also very well known since they are the second largest (5.5 kms) and best preserved walls in the world after the famous Great Wall of China. There are sixteen keeps and five gates, each of which deserves seeing along with their inscriptions and relief. There are four main gates along the wall called as Dag Kapi, Urfa Kapi, Mardin Kapi and Yeni Kapi, and they open to four different directions. The walls are 12 metres high, 3-5 metres wide and have 82 watchtowers. The city holds many mosques and buildings of long historical and archaeological importance. There are four museums in the city centre. When you add to those the renowned watermelons of about 40 kilograms (85 lb) approximately, and its silver and copper artifacts, Diyarbakir certainly stands as a destination to be visited in Anatolia. The town of Cermik is a spa centre. Faculty of Theology The Faculty, which was founded under the administration of our university, started its activities in 1993-1994 Academic Year and moved to its new building constructed on campus area. The surround of Gazi Kosku (Ataturk’s Villa) is a nice place for picnic. Magnificent samples of medieval military architecture, these ramparts were decorated with inscriptions and embossments. Ramparts restored by Byzantine Emperor Costantinus in 349 B.C. But the exact date of their construction is not known. The Grand Mosque: It is known as the fifth Harem-i Şerif in Islamic world. After the conquest of Diyarbakır by Islamic armies, the biggest Christian temple in the city, Mar-Tama church was converted into a mosque in 639. It was repaired in 1091 during Great Seljuk Sultan, Meliksah period. The mosque which was repaired with the help of the public in 1240 after it had been greatly demolished due to the earthquake and fire. This initial Islamic structure, which has a great value in connection with inscriptions of various periods and fountain on its courtyard, was constructed with black stones. Anatolian oldest mosque, The Grand Mosque, still draws attention today as a monumental structure group with surrounding two theology schools and other structures. In connection with its plan, it is similar to the Ummiye and Emevi Mosques, constructed between 705 and 715. Malabadi Bridge: It is near the town of Silvan on the Batman brook. Among the stone ramparts in the world, it is the one with the widest arch. Education is carried out in buildings taken over from the Ministry of Education. This process of interaction has continued up to our times to yield an extremely rich and colorful cultural life. Sanliurfa, Harran Believed to be the ancient city of Harran mentioned in the old Testament, Harran, 48 km south of Sanliurfa, is known more now for its unusual beehive dwellings than as the place where Abraham actually spent several years of his life. Harran, which was also known as Helenopolis, was burned and destroyed by Mongolian invaders in 1260. Included among the archeological finds are those of the largest ancient Islamic university, city walls dating from the 8. century, four gates and a citadel. Harran Houses Batman, Hasankeyf Bridge In Hasankeyf are the ruins of the 12th-century capital of the Artukids. The bridge, which once spanned the Dicle (Tigris) and connected the two parts of the city with the ruined palace inside the citadel, evokes the ghosts of dynasty. The 15th-century Zeynel Bey Mausoleum, attractively decorated with turquoise tiles, reveals Persian influence. Remaining piers across the Tigris at Hasankeyf Bridge were built under the Amir Fakhr ad-Din Kara ibn Dawud in 1116.
