Alper Family Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Incentive Grants Throughout history, Jews have advocated for social issues, provided service to their communities, and been the change they want to see in the world. Now we have the opportunity to reach the next level. The Alper Family Foundation via The PANIM Institute for Jewish Leadership and Values of BBYO has expanded the Alper Family Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Incentive Grants to include teens from across the Jewish Community. Through this grant, Jewish teens from around the world have the opportunity to develop an understanding of social entrepreneurship and integrate their Jewish values to create a service and advocacy project in their home communities. The Alper Social Entrepreneurship Grant is an incredible opportunity to take community service to the next level. This grant will allow grantees to gain knowledge and build skills to execute projects that will include community organizing, networking, fundraising, marketing and advocating. A selection committee for The Alper Grant will select 10 grantees to receive $500 capital seed awards distributed between October 2010 and February 2011. The grantee with the most innovative, effective project will receive a $1500 final prize to further their efforts and bring their project to new heights. The winner will also have the opportunity to present their project at BBYO’s international convention to expose a network of over 700 teens, staff members, and lay leaders to their work. This elite leadership program will challenge teens to not only successfully implement their own ideas, but serve as a mentor to future grant recipients. The PANIM Institute of BBYO is dedicated to teaching teens about effecting social change while emphasizing the importance of Tikkun Olam throughout the broader Jewish community. The opportunity to take action has come and we are ecstatic to bring this opportunity to the forefront of our community. We look forward to receiving your application, and seeing how you can change the world. B’shalom, Sarah Arnold Bobby Dishell Jason Gordon Sharon Leshner Memphis, TN Los Angeles, CA Palm Beach, FL Cherry Hill, NJ Alper Family Foundation Social Entrepreneur Incentive Grant Thanks to a generous grant from the Alper Family Foundation, THE PANIM Institute of BBYO is pleased to be able to offer a number of incentive grants of $500 each to all Jewish teens. These grants are designed to encourage teen leaders to undertake meaningful community service and/or advocacy projects in their own home communities. Although sustainability is not a requirement of the grant— previous grants have been awarded for one-time events—the ongoing nature of a proposed project will be looked upon favorably by the Award committee. One selected grantee will have the opportunity to showcase their project at BBYO’s International Convention. We look forward to hearing from you. 2010-2011 Grant Application In order for us to evaluate your project idea, please answer the following questions on another sheet of paper and submit those answers, along with the attached basic information sheet and budget worksheet. Grants will be awarded on a rolling, monthly basis between October 2010 and February 2011. 1. Essay - What connection, if any, does your project have to the Jewish values you learned about on your seminar? For example, if you are creating a project to help local homeless people in your community, you might write about the Jewish value of b’tzelem elohim (300 words maximum). 2. Project Logistics A. What is your project? Please give a brief description of what you intend to do. Please include the time frame, location, and any other relevant details (150 words maximum). B. What community need does your project address? How will your project meet this need? Be as specific as possible as to your goals and desired outcomes (150 words maximum). C. How will you carry out your project? What steps will you take to implement your project? Who will be involved and how much time do you estimate each person will spend on the project? Please give us a basic “implementation plan” for your project, including a projected timeline (250 words maximum). D. Who will be your “mentor” for this project? Please identify one adult who has agreed to act as a supporter of your project. For your Social Entrepreneurship project, there must be a staff-person in charge of overseeing the entire production. The mentor fulfills the role of an advisor; he is there to ensure that things are running smoothly and to aid you in your project if he can. Mentors can realistically be any adult, your Rabbi, your temple youth director, etc. And, if you are in BBYO, it can also be your regional director or chapter advisor. (100 words maximum). E. What is the budget for your project? Please outline all expenses and income for the project. How will you use an Alper Incentive Grant? If your project requires more than $500, how will you secure those funds? Please see the following sample budget, and fill out the budget worksheet (150 words maximum). If you are awarded an Alper Social Entrepreneur Incentive Grant, PANIM will be periodically following up with you and checking on the status of your project. 2010-2011 Alper Incentive Grant Basic Information Sheet Project Name:_________________________________________________________________ Name (of applicant): ___________________________________________________________ Address: _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ E-mail: ____________________________ Phone: _______________________________ Adult Mentor Name: __________________________________________________________ Address: _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ E-mail: ____________________________ Phone: _______________________________ If you are partnering with other teens, please provide their information here: 1. ___________________________________________________________________________ 2. ___________________________________________________________________________ 3. ___________________________________________________________________________ 4. ___________________________________________________________________________ 5. ___________________________________________________________________________ (attach an additional sheet if necessary) If you are partnering with existing agencies (i.e. a homeless shelter), please provide the agency’s information here: Agency name: ________________________________________________________________ Contact name: ______________________ Phone number: ___________________________ Agency name: ________________________________________________________________ Contact name: ______________________ Phone number: ___________________________ (attach an additional sheet if necessary) SAMPLE BUDGET WORKSHEET Project name: Community-Wide Winter Clothing Drive and Giveaway Category Expenses Item Cost Total Cost Flyers 200 x $0.10 $20.00 Rental of the community center for distribution center Collection Boxes 8 hours x $50/hr $400.00 Donated by supermarket 100 x $0.50 Donate by clothing store $150.00 for 1 day rental $0.00 4 boxes x $10 10 boxes of cookies x $5.00, 10 packs of juice boxes x $2.50 $40.00 $75.00 Hangers for clothes Rental of Clothing racks U-haul rental to deliver boxes of clothes to local shelter Pizza lunch during sorting of clothes Snacks for 60 homeless people coming to pick up clothes Income $55.00 $0.00 $150.00 Total Expenses $740.00 Source* Amount Small-Alper Incentive Grant Team member contributions Synagogue fundraiser $20 each Total Income $500.00 $60.00 $180.00 $740.00 *Please briefly explain sources of funding other than Alper Incentive Grant: Each of the three teens in the project have agreed to donate $20 of their own money to this project.
