Excavation W o r k s o f Ç AN A KKA LE Kazı Rehberi Apollon Smintheus 1 APOLLON SMİNTHEUS KUTSAL ALANI ve KAZILARI THE SANCTUARY OF APOLLO SMINTHEUS and EXCAVATIONS G ü l p ı n a r beldesinde yer alan Smintheion’da (Apollon Smintheus Kutsal Alanı), Prof. Dr. Coşkun Özgünel’in başkanlığında 1980 yılından bu yana arkeolojik kazı ve restorasyon çalışmaları yürütülmektedir. Excavation and restoration works have been conducted in Smintheion (The Sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus), which is located in the village of Gülpınar, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Coşkun Özgünel since 1980. Smintheon is best known with the remarkable Temple of Apollo Smintheus built in the 2nd BC. The prehistoric settlement dating around 5000 BC located beneath the Graeco-Remains of the sanctuary represents one of the earliest settlement so far identified in the region of the Troad. “The Excavation Museum of Smintheion” houses illustrious sculptural finds from the temple. İliada Destanına göre savaş Khryse kentinin rahibi Khryses’in kızı olan Khryseis’in, tapınağı yağmalayan Akhalar’ın lideri Kral Agamemnon tarafından esir alınması ile başlar. Kral Agamemnon esir aldığı Khryseis’i babası rahip Khryses’e vermeyi reddedince Khryses, rahipliğini yaptığı Apollon Smintheus’a yalvarır. The most significant aspect of Smintheion stems from the fact that it is depicted in the first lines of the epic of Iliad, in which Homer narrates the Trojan Wars. The poet Homer from Smyrna, who lived in the late 8th century BC, refers to the existence of the Temple of Apollo Smintheus, whose priest was called Khryses in the town of Khryse. Apollo Smintheus (“The Lord of the Mice”) is a god who had an important impact in the beginning of the legendary Battles of Troia. According to the Iliad, the battle starts when Khryseis, the daughter Khryses who is the priest of Khryse Town, was captured by King Agamemnon, the leader of Achaeans who plunder the temple. When Agamemnon refuses to return Khryseis to her father Priest Khryses, Khryses prays to Apollo Smintheus for whom he serves. Apollo Smintheus accepts the Priest’s prayers and sends a terrible black plague over the army of Achaeans. This mythological event is considered among the important moments of the Trojan Wars as well as the Iliad. The Sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus was first discovered in the 18th century. The first modern archaeological excavations which were conducted by Jean Baptiste Lechevalier in 1785-86 revealed the existence of the temple of Apollo Smintheus. British Admiral R. N. Spratt came to the region in order to perform map works in the fall of 1883. Then, he declared to the archaeology world that the finds, he encountered in the village of Gülpınar (formerly Külahlı) an Ionic temple honouring the god Apollo. After Spratt, R. P. Pullan conducted excavations in the site in the fall of 1886 and he declared it to the archaeology world once again with new finds. After an interval of 100 years, the temple was evoked to the archaeologists by H. Weber in 1966. In the early 1970s, Çanakkale Archaeology Museum conducted excavations with the aim of exploration in and around the temple. There is integrity and planning between the progress of events in the Iliad and the visual works of Smintheion. The event starts on the column drums with relief decorations (Columna caelatae) and continue on the friezes. Nonetheless, the finds refer us to the 24th chapter of the Iliad. The architects and sculpture artists applied the fiction of the Iliad in a temple dedicated to Apollo and they honoured Anatolia with a god. They expressed their gratitude by depicting him with his family on a column drums with relief decoration. Tapınağın sütun tamburlarında, Apollon, Zeus, Leto, Artemis ve Musalar, Rahip Khryses’in Agamemnon’dan kızı Khryseis’i istemesi, Apollon’un Akha donanması üzerine veba salgınını yollaması, Odysseus’un Khryseis’i getirmesi, Thetis’in Zeus’a yakarışı ve Priamos’un Hektor’un cesedini almak için Akhilleus’un çadırına gelmesi gibi konular betimlenmiştir. Some of the events depicted on the column drums of the temple are: Apollon, Zeus, Leto, Artemis and Muses, Priest Khryses demanding his daughter Khryseis from Agamemnon, Apollo sending plague over the fleet of Achaeans, Odysseus bringing Khryseis back, the prayer of Thetis to Zeus and Priamus going to the tent of Akhilleus to take the body of Hektor. On the upper architectural structure of the temple, the crucial points in the Iliad of Homer are depicted in the frieze blocks which depict the mythological scenes of the Trojan Wars. It can be said that the visual works of the Temple of Apollo Smintheus reveals that an advanced sense of art existed in the land of Troad. Another reason for the growing interest in Smintheion (Gülpınar) is that an ancient oil workshop which was discovered around the excavation site was restored and became “The Excavation Museum of Smintheion”. The museum was open to visits only during the excavation seasons but efforts to open the Excavation Museum of Smintheion to yearlong visits have been going on. 5 Roma Dönemi Hamamı The Roman Bath Bu hamamın plan oturtma şekli, antik çağın ünlü mimarı Vitruvius’un “Hamamlar için ilk olarak, mümkün olan en sıcak konum seçilmeli yani, kuzey ve kuzeydoğu yönleri dışında bir yön seçilmelidir...” kuralına uymamaktadır. Smintheion hamamında arazinin durumu göz önüne alınarak planlama yapılmıştır. Ana mekânlar birbirine bitişik ve paralel dört odadan oluşmaktadır Bu düzenlemesiyle kutsal alanın en üst noktasında yer alan kaynak suyu ve su depoları, suyun kullanımını ve suyla ilgili yapıları gerekli kılmaktadır. The famous architect of the ancient world, Vitruvius says, “First of all, the best position should be decided for the baths; that’s to say, a direction except for north and northeast should be selected.” However, this bath does not comply with his rule in terms of its position planning. The conditions of the land were taken into consideration in the position planning of Smintheion Bath. The main parts hold four adjacent and parallel rooms. With this arrangement, spring water and water storages on the top of the sacred area require the usage of water and buildings for water. 6 This planning order follows an order from the warm areas to hot areas in terms of bathing process and architecture. It is a unique design and it is difficult to find a similar design inside and outside Anatolia. As for the classical plan reading system in the structures, an order from hot areas to cold areas is preferred in the example of Smintheion. In this context, four main areas were determined: caldarium (hot section), tepidarium (warm section), frigidarium (cold section) which also holds the cold pool and apodyterium (locker/ changing room). Smintheion’dan Önce: Prehistorik Yerleşim Before Smintheon: Prehistoric Settlement Apollon Smintheus Kutsal Alanı’nda (Smintheion) sürdürülen arkeolojik kazı çalışmaları sırasında M.Ö. 5000 civarına tarihlenen bir prehistorik yerleşime ait kalıntılar tespit edilmiştir. Some remains of the prehistoric settlement which is dated back to 5000 BC were traced during the excavations in the Sanctuary of Apollon Smintheus (Smintheion). The Middle Chalcolithic Period, which is one of the most obscure periods in the history of Western Anatolia, represents a period when the first settlements in the Aegean island began and when the cultural interactions and trade began to increase in Anatolian and Aegean lands. During the excavations on the prehistoric site or when the excavated site is taken into consideration, it is revealed that the prehistoric Smintheion settlement was represented through a single cultural layer. However, it was certificated that this single cultural layer had two architectural phases in some areas. The finds of the excavations indicate that the prehistoric community of the site supported their subsistence with various economical activities, such as, agriculture, stockbreeding, hunting, fishing and exploitation of marine resources. 7 Smintheion’u komşu Aleksandreia Troas kentine bağlayan taş döşemeli Roma Çağı yolunun bugüne kadar kazılan kısmı. So far excavated section of the stone pavement road from The Roman Period, connected Smintheon to the neighbouring city Alexandreia Troas. The tradition of fine-burnished handmade greyish black and brown pottery was common in the prehistoric settlement. Especially the samples which were decorated by burnishing, incision and painting characterize the period. The most abundant examples include pottery with horn handles, four footed bowls, wide footed bowls, miniature pots, lofty handle pots and hollow pots. Pişmiş topraktan yapılmış nesneler arasında ele geçen insan biçimli heykelcikler oldukça dikkat çekicidir. Şu ana kadar yapılan kazılarda 20 adet pişmiş toprak insan başı biçimli heykelcik parçası ele geçmiştir. 8 The figurines which were found among the clay objects are quite remarkable. In the excavations up to now, 20 clay figurines in the shape of human head have been revealed.
