FA 494 Oral History Documentary on Turkish Cinema Fall 2014 Instructor: Özcan Vardar ozcanvardar@yahoo.com Course Description: This course offers to bring two different disciplines together, Oral History and Documentary, and focuses on the history of the Turkish cinema through the audiovisual recordings of the interviews with the retired figures (directors, producers, actors and actresses, cinematographers, etc.) of the old Turkish Film Industry (a.k.a. Yesilcam). Throughout the semester, the students will be taking part in making oral history documentaries. Students will conduct, shoot and record the interviews and finally edit the whole material in order to make the oral history documentary of the Turkish cinema veterans. Students must be able to read and understand Turkish to take this course for credit. To request a consent, students must send an email to ozcanvardar@yahoo.com by 17.00 on 16th of September, Tuesday, explaining your interest in this course and Turkish cinema, and must request a consent via Obikas as well. Course Days & Room: Fridays, 10:00-13:00 @ Mithat Alam Film Center Requirements: There will be required readings for certain weeks (see below) and students must read it before coming to class. The readings will be sent via email or will be available on internet. There will be film screenings and discussions during the lectures. Coming late or leaving the class early without an acceptable excuse will not be tolerated. An absence of totally 4 weeks will result a direct F! Students are required to submit 4 papers: 1- A research paper about the character including the filmography and the list of questions (Before the interviews start) 2- Transcriptions of the whole interviews 3- Interpretations of the transcriptions on paper 4- Final paper (obligatory) about personal experiences during the making of the documentary. Late submissions of the papers will not be accepted. Shooting and editing an oral history documentary is essential part in this course.
