There are several ways to ask for a lower price. We can tell him a price lower than we actually want to pay. Because when we start bargaining, he will automatically bargain back and try to meet in the middle. Or we say we need some discount. We should be clear and certain about what we say so that the seller understand us clearly. There is no need to use complicated or long phrases.Let's see what we can say to bargain in a shop:] -Buyer: a.5TL.....5LİRA b.İndirim lütfen.....Discount please c.Öğrenci indirimi.....Student discount d.Daha ucuz, daha ucuz!.....Cheaper,cheaper! e.Fiyatı indirin.....Lower the price [After this point, the seller either lowers the price or says no and insists on the first price. If he says no, the first thing to do is to insist back on the price. If he still says no, we can try to pretend as if we leave. In Turkey, most sellers when they believe 7 that the buyer will no longer buy the product if no discount is made, they immidiately lower the price. Therefore, in most cases, it works if we pretend to leave.] - Seller: Yok yapamam......No, I can't. - Buyer: Tamam teşekkürler......Okay, thank you. [Then here, pretend to leave] [After then he most probably lowers the price. If not, there is not much to do.] - Seller: Tamam tamam 7TL..... Okay, 7 LİRA. [He lowers the price and notice he doesnt give it to you for 5TL, he gives you a price btw the number you said in the beginning and the actual price.] - Buyer: Tamam, alıyorum......Okay, I'll buy. - Buyer: Teşekkürler, iyi günler.....Thanks, have a nice day. - Seller: İyi günler.....Have a nice day Asking for the size -Buyer: Merhaba, Bu tişörtün hangi bedenleri var?.....Hello, Which sizes do you have for this t-shirt? -Seller: S,M........Small and Medium -Buyer: Large bedeni yok mu?............Don't you have large size? -Seller: Maalesef, kalmadı...............Unfortunately, sold out. I – Ben You- Sen He/She/It- O We- Biz You- Siz They- Onlar As you can see, in Turkish we don’t have different pronouns for he/she/it. We can understand gender of subject, according to sentence. 11 For instance: O, bugün çok güzel bir etek giymiş. In this sentence “etek” (skirt) gives us a clue about gender of subject. O durmadan havlıyor. In this sentence, “havlıyor” (barking) gives us a clue about subject because people cannot barking. Therefore we understand that our subject is dog. Also you can notice a similarity between I and We, You (singular) and You (plural) and He/She/it and They. I – Ben We- Biz Both of them begin with “B”. It is a good reminder because “we” is a pronoun which include “me” and “others”. Therefore (Ben+ Diğerleri = Biz) We see this similarity in You (singular) and You (plural) (You + Others = You (plural) (Sen + Diğerleri = Siz) It is also good reminder for personal endings in verbs. For instance: Sen bugün geç geldin. Siz bugün geç geldiniz. First sentence ends with –n Second ends with –niz 12 Sen geldin Siz geldiniz We use also plural you (siz) for showing respect. Hoşgeldiniz. (You are welcome) Nasılsınız? (How are you) He/She/It= O They = Onlar In this concept, only –lar/-ler makes difference. –lar/ler is plural endings, it makes plural an object or subject. (O + Diğerleri = Onlar) For instance: O, bugün eve geldi. Onlar, bugün eve geldiler. We don’t use any personal endings for emphasizing “o” in verbs, therefore you just put “-lar/ler” to verb for showing its subject is plural. Ps: We can understand the subject of sentence from verb, but in some situations we need to see pronouns as a word in sentence. Ps: Pronouns-verbs endings relationship is not valid for I and We. For instance: Ben yurda döndüm. Biz yurda döndük. 13 Although “ben” and “biz” are different with “-iz” we could not use this difference as “sen” and “siz” Sen okula geldin. Siz, okula geldiniz. -n -iz O, ödev yaptı. Singular Onlar, ödev yaptılar. (no extra endings) -lar (plural endings) Ben eve geldim. n - Biz eve geldik. -m -iz -ik (There is no similarity) 14 Exercise Fill the blanks with suitable pronouns ---- bugün okula gittim. ---- durmadan ağlıyor. ---- kapıyı çok hızlı kapattın. ---- tatile gidecekler. ---- bu işi organize ediyoruz. ---- buradan gidiyorsunuz. Fiil Çekimi-Mastar Hali Making a verbs from infinitive forms For instance Gitmek- infinitive form Cut the –mek Add time addition and personal addition Gidiyorum. Gi(t)-i-yor-um. 15 Gittim. Git-ti-m. Gider. Gi(t)-er. Sometimes p,ç,t,k, changes into b,c,d,g when you add vowel to verb. For instance: Gidiyorum. Gi(t)-i-yor-um. “t” changes to “d” because of “i” Belli Başlı Fiiller Gitmek (to go) Gelmek (to come) Dinlemek (to listen) Konuşmak (to speak) Yaşamak (to live) Anlatmak (to tell) Yemek (to eat) İçmek (to drink) 16 WEEK7 –i, -e, -de, -den Learning the –e, -i- -de- den is important because it shows that your aim of using object. Let’s look at its meanings -e is equal to “to” I am going to home. Ben eve gidiyorum. -i is used for emphasizing Ben evi seviyorum. -de means the staying -Ben Koç Üniversitesi’nde kalıyorum. -den means the “from” -Ben evden geliyorum. 17 Practise Ben Taksim.. gidiyorum. O, Beşiktaş.. yaşıyor. Arkadaşım, okul… geliyor. Bu resim.. çok sevdim. Ps: In Turkish sentences, verb always stays in end of sentence. 18 WEEK8 Geçmiş Zaman In Turkish grammar, we have 2 types of past tense: -di li geçmiş zaman, -miş li geçmiş zaman -Di’li Geçmiş Zaman: It shows that you were active in the action or you know that action is completely happened. For instance: Dün akşam, eve geldim. action, I was aware. It shows that I know I made the Geçen akşam, arkadaşım bize yemek yaptı. action happened, I am sure Again I know that -Miş’li Geçmiş Zaman It is used for uncertain actions in past. Generally we heard actions from other people For instance: Dün akşam eve geç gelmişim. I came home late, but I am not sure, I heard that probably from other person 19 Geçen akşam, arkadaşın yemek yapmış. Your friend prepared to you dinner, I heard it someone but I am not sure We generally use –di’li geçmiş zaman for past tense. But if we are unsure or we heard it from someone else we use –miş’li geçmiş zaman. Practise Elif, dün akşam yemek yemeye gel… (I know action happens) Elif, dün akşam yemek yemeye gel… ( I am not sure, I heard from someone else) Bütün hafta evi temizledi… (I made action, I am sure) O, bütün hafta evi temizle… (I heard that she did it but I am not sure) Short reminder about: Past Tense, -i,-e,-de,-den, zamirler 20 Practise Fill in the blanks (use only past tense-di’li geçmiş zaman) Ben, bugün ev.. gel..
