SANAT TARİHÇİSİ VE ÖĞRETİM GÖREVLİSİ SUSANN WINTSCH İLE SANATÇI VE ÖĞRETİM GÖREVLİSİ NECLA RÜZGÂR’IN EŞKÜRATÖRLÜĞÜNDE HAZIRLANAN “DEVAM ETMEYE DEVAM” BAŞLIKLI BU SAYIDA ŞU 33 İSMİN İŞLERİNDEN ÖRNEKLER YER ALIYOR: AHMET ÖĞÜT, BANU CENNETOĞLU, BENGÜ KARADUMAN, BURAK DELİER, CENGİZ ÇEKİL, CENGİZ TEKİN, ENDER GELGEÇ, EXTRAMÜCADELE, FAHRETTİN ÖRENLİ, FERHAT ÖZGÜR, FULYA ÇETİN, FÜSUN ONUR, GÖZDE İLKİN, GÜLÇİN AKSOY, GÜLSÜN KARAMUSTAFA, HALE TENGER, HASAN SALİH AY, İRFAN ÖNÜRMEN, NANCY ATAKAN, NÂZIM HİKMET RICHARD DİKBAŞ, NECLA RÜZGÂR, NERİMAN POLAT, NEVİN ALADAĞ, NİL YALTER, NİLBAR GÜREŞ, ORHAN PAMUK, ÖZLEN GÜNYOL § MUSTAFA KUNT, PINAR YOLAÇAN, SERVET KOÇYİĞİT, ŞÜKRAN MORAL, YASEMİN NUR, YASEMİN ÖZCAN. Metropoller yaratıcılık için zengin bir temel Mine Haydaroğlu: This project is defined as a contemporary art space on DVD that anyone can buy at select bookstores (Robinson in Istanbul) or order online. What are the foremost or unique characteristics of this project in your opinion? This is a question for both of you, please. Necla Rüzgâr: I was very impressed by the Tehran DVD. I considered it a new opportunity for us; to build our own viewing conditions, to view a good exhibition while at home, instead of rushing to make it in time to see a temporary show. The idea of turning this most ordinary material of technology into an exhibition hall is very apt in terms of our daily life conditions as well as in terms of contemporary art. For example, it is not always possible to visit an exhibition with all my students. But I have been able carry the exhibition in this DVD in my pocket and share it with my students 66 a SANAT DÜNYAMIZ 132 during lessons. The classroom became a lively environment, as if we were visiting an exhibition together; we talked, we discussed, interpreted the works. One of the most special components of this project is the courage Susann has shown, the risks she has taken and time she has spent to understand the art scene each time in a different city. During the time we worked together I realized that this is really not an easy job. Grasping the general character of a metropolis on one side, it takes a lot of time and effort to meet with each artist separately and understand their practices. But the collection that resulted at the end of this long process enables the viewer to perceive the climate of the contemporary art scene of a country or a metropolis. Susann Wintsch: TREIBSAND is an ongoing series that opens the perception of contemporary art into every angle in the world - with the help of a DVD, a very simple media that comes to any home having a computer. Each volume explores a challenging metropolis – because most of us artists and intellectuals live in metropolitan areas, thus we share a related room of living and working. In the past twenty years I have seen numerous cities, and find it this day just too artificial to focus on distinctions. Metropoles are a rich ground of creativity. They are dense and informative rooms and this is why many artworks can be found that open up the limitations in reality and widen our thoughts of how we can imagine our mental and emotional future. M.H.: Susann, as you are the initiator, the brainchild of this project, can you tell us how this all started? When did you decide to devote an edition to contemporary art in Istanbul? What were your criteria? S.W.: TREIBSAND started with sunuyorlar. Onlar kendi yollarında ilerliyorlar; SANAT DÜNYAMIZ 132 a quest of friends who run a small company for technical equipment and DVD-production in Basel. They wanted me to develop a sample-DVD to show its facilities for artists. At that time I had been traveling in Eastern Europe where I met the artist Milica Tomic in Belgrad. Also back then, numerous exhibitions on contemporary art on the Balkans were touring, and we found many of them bizarre – so briefly; all these aspects merged into a DVD on contemporary art in ex- Yugoslavia, realized with Milica Tomic. Henceforth all the volumes are built in collaboration with artists; we make two of one, bring spaces, ideas and views in a continuous, broad and deepened dialogue to create the vision of TREIBSAND. About Istanbul, please see answer to question 4. M.H.: Necla, when Susann invited you to this project as co -curator, what were your first thoughts and how did the project proceed? Can you tell us about your discussions, the studio visits etc. N.R.: The first meeting Susann and I had was just a meeting of an artist and a curator. The second time we met Susann proposed co-curatorship to me. The first thing that came to my mind was “Can I do this job?” Because before anything else, this is a very specific and original project, a permanent piece of work that will go into circulation in the international art world easily. These are both very exciting aspects and at the same time they create stress. But as soon as I started working on this project, all these were completely erased from my mind, because the DVD is made over a long time, it is a long process that demands very detailed and carefully executed work, therefore you just work and work; there is no time to imagine the finalized DVD. When Susann and I decided to work together, we did have an idea 67 about the art scene in Istanbul. While working together, we agreed on some subjects and thought differently on some others, so we tried to understand each other’s points of view, because Susann was able to see things that I could not while looking “from inside” and I could see the points that she might have missed while looking “from outside”. M.H.: Necla and Susann, at what point did you both decide on the concept “Keep on keeping on” and can you elaborate on it please? S.W.: The concept “Keep on” arose of a night of talking in Ankara, sleepwalkingly. Some weeks later, we met the artist Nazım Hikmet Richard Dikbaş who complemented the working title to Keep On Keeping On, deriving of a song from Curtis Mayfield in 1972. This sentence doubles the concept most beautifully into a rhythm – we can also say into a mantra. We adored it and so the title was born as well. N.R.: I loved Nazım’s proposal instantly and without a doubt when I first heard it. Keep on keeping on; brings into mind not a completed, finished situation but a strong will; there is a determination to finalize it. This can also be read as an invitation to continue doing something together, in support of each other. It also overlaps with the construction of this DVD. The influence of the DVD is without a doubt hidden in each and every work in it. But the most influence stems from the togetherness of these many works, their being next to each other and the aura they create together. M.H.: Susann, the previous volume (01) published in 2007 focused on contemporary art in Tehran. Its concept was “Analysing While Waiting (For Time to Pass)”. What 68 SANAT DÜNYAMIZ 132 a SÖYLEŞİ Necla Rüzgâr Nil Yalter Ferhat Özgür b a TREIBSAND b will the focus of the next volume be? Can you talk about how you select these cities? What are the elements or ideas or anything specific that drive you to make this selection? S.W.: Choosing Istanbul after Tehran was a decoy bird to tether the first volume on the second. It makes the sequence of cities natural if it has a geographical order. But TREIBSAND is not about art varying by regions. This will reveal when I realize volume 3 (and in between I will do a volume on Basel, Geneva and Zurich of my home country Switzerland) jumping to Seoul and Tokyo, two cities that are and, at the same time, are not at all concerned with each other – accurately like it is with Tehran and Istanbul. Open habitats that provide ideas to think a human future affect me. I want to seek them in all possible spaces, times and by as many authors as possible. M.H.: As there are 33 artists on this DVD, I cannot ask you to comment on each artist; but what would you like to say about these artists and these works? Some general comments or pointers from both of you please. S.W.: I feel a great respect for the artists we have chosen for TREIBSAND. They follow their own path, maybe an inner journey, but are responsive towards universal concerns and offering a dialogue. After meeting so many artists since 2011 in Istanbul, their works began to float in my mind, linking with each other and finally forming a common ground that defines the present title of Volume 02. N.R.: The most obvious common aspect of all the works in the DVD is “persistence”. When we look at the works one by one, we see that each work is persistent about something: About challenging a system that does not work, by pushing it; making SANAT DÜNYAMIZ 132 visible the sacredness or the complete opposite, the defects of a family; about loving almost on the brink of an obsession; about iconization; defunctionalizing of roles, objects or time; by underlining the historical, contemporary or personal image codes, to persist, in a state of insistence that range from conspiracy theories to strategies for survival... We tried to build a chain of imagery that would reveal the dialogue between the works, by juxtaposing works that called each other when forming the dates and the contents of the DVD. For instance, a claim made by a work is either supported or challenged or completely taken from its context to another level by the following work. This dialogue continues with a tension that at times rises and at times falls, it does not reach an absolute and conspicuous end; but all meets on the grounds of “keeping on”. M.H.: Susann, what are the copyright statuses of these works? Some of the pieces on the DVD are excerpts of works selected by the artists; some are video essays and some are video works in full. So can we say this DVD allows its owner to have a piece of work by the artist? Or is it mostly a new channel of access to works? Is it a democratic way of allowing direct contact between the artist and the viewer? How would you best describe it? S.W.: The DVD is clearly a room to show video works and moving images. The character of a video is story based, that’s why it is hard to comprehend only through video stills in magazines or books. To protect it from unauthorized copying or any other trial of illegal ownership, several artists chose to show an excerpt only. Other artists put a watermark onto it, or arranged their work differently and thus created an original for 69 belki içe dönük bir yolculuktalar, ama evrensel meselelere duyarlılar ve bir diyalog sunuyorlar. DVD’deki bazı par ç al ar s anatç ı l ar ı n kend i l er i tarafından seçilmiş bölümler. S.W.: Çok açık; DVD video işleri 70 a SANAT DÜNYAMIZ 132 the DVD. Another group decided to have their video on full length. It is up to the artists how to handle it but in any case the copyright stays with the artists. Besides video works and photographs there is a third group we call video essays where TREIBSAND and the artist in respect share the copyright. These are short films we produce together with an artist at a time, to film a selection of his or her paintings, sculptures or of a performance. The video essays also fully take the advantage of the DVD towards an art magazine. They portray a selection of works in a real environment, hence one can measure its real corporeality, magnitude and haptics; on can see how the works plays within its colors and lights, hear the sounds of the vicinity and maybe even see the artist in one moment, in short, you can see the vitality and liveliness of a work. M.H.: As you have both spent many months visiting studios, galleries, museums, meeting many people and also living here for periods of time; I would like to ask you both; Necla and Susann, can you each tell me what you see as the big picture here? Both in terms of this project, and in terms of the general art scene in Turkey? N.R.: I think a very fast transition is taking place. Despite the increase in gallery spaces, there is a decrease in independent exhibition spaces. Not long ago, until about five years ago, artists used to be very excited to show together in independent exhibitions. Therefore the energy level of those exhibitions was very high. Many of the artists who are wellknown today found their places in the art scene through the aura created by those exhibitions. However nowadays it seems that the only way an artist can show his/her works is by working with a gallery. This limits the movement space, especially for the young artists. When I try to see the big picture here: There has been an improvement in terms of opening up to the world market; artists are more aware and more courageous in acting together for the artists’ rights, and in claiming these rights; there are more works with stronger productions. But despite these improvements, I see that the forms of production have stagnated and have become repetitious. S.W.: I believe I came in the time of galleries. That’s why the quality of works is commonly brilliant. Galleries help by paying the productions costs in advance in expectation to sell – the purchaser is known beforehand – and they can be experimental because they risk less a cluster failure than an individual artist does. Of course, an artist who doesn’t have a gallery has a serious problem here. So the spirit and potentiality of art in Istanbul is sleek. However, whatever the system may be it always calls serious artists to make good art pieces.
